Then, the sun comes up and you think, “How did I get here?”

How did the darkness give way?
How did three years fall away?
And if you have the choice, do you stay? taken in Mount Whitney by @marissafspada

Resisting the impulse to perform ruggedness with this year’s colour palette. “Canadian Maple” red nails survived unscathed the entire hike. taken in Kearsarge Pass by @marissafspada

It’s rare that I get to see myself on the trail from someone else’s perspective. Three summers have been archived as a series of granite landscapes, internal monologues, and tired selfies. But here I am, early morning, wearing every article of clothing I’d packed, about to make the final (ish) ascent to Mt. Whitney summit.
Can’t believe this was only seven weeks ago. by @marissafspada

Imagine the trail that would ask you to embody and externalize your grief would send a rainbow as you walked its final mile…

It’s all so improbable. by @marissafspada

I bought my first piece of backpacking gear in 2018 and spent nearly a decade chasing down this beautiful dream.

I searched, and I begged, and I stayed way too long, wishing that someone would come with me.

And then one day, it got quiet. And I learned to stay perfectly still — not by choice, but simply because there was nothing left. I had screamed too loud. I had stretched too far. I had wasted too much time waiting.

If you’re anything like me, you know that it’s always going to break your heart — when you stop and look back, with all that wide open space, and yet no one moving toward you.

Feel it. And then keep walking. taken in John Muir Trail by @marissafspada

The strange beauty of the Bighorn Plateau and the quiet thrill of being one tiny human crossing this otherworldly terrain. Somewhere in between the Great Western Divide and the Sierra Crest, spiritual exchanges were had with adorable alpine rodents.

Three Summers in the Range of Light.

The permit for the JMT is called, the “Golden Ticket.” If you win the lottery, you get to spend three weeks (give or take) in the Sierra backcountry. It was my first solo backpacking trip and I was not ready.

The unexpected beauty of completing this journey over three years is what the wilderness reflected back to me: Three summers. Different stages of grief. Different fears. New competencies. New desires. Three different versions of me.

Same hair.

I’m overwhelmed with gratitude (and a bit of sleep deprivation) for how this story unfolded. taken in John Muir Trail by @marissafspada

It’s been two years since I first stumbled into the Sierra with a backcountry permit for one and a hopelessly dysregulated nervous system.
