May was ALS awareness month (it was also super hectic and that’s why this is a little late; oops) Never in my life did I think that ALS would impact me or my family, until this past March when my dad received his diagnosis. ALS is a rare disease with no cure. It is also very difficult to diagnose. I watched him struggle for over a year going to countless specialists and hospitals, and receiving no answers. Every doctor he went to said that nothing was wrong with him. In February he was admitted to three hospitals before finally receiving a diagnosis at Penn Medicine. Though I am heartbroken to see him go through this, I am incredibly proud of him and how brave he has been.

I’m sharing his story in hopes of continuing the conversation and raising awareness. It is incredibly important to continue conversations about ALS. The 2014 ALS ice bucket challenge raised $115 million for ALS research and care. This research discovered new medication which helps to slow the disease’s progression, and improved access to care for those living with ALS.
