Dear Ma,
Ten long years. It’s been over ten years since I’ve last seen my best friend. Since I’ve heard your sweet voice calling out to me. Since I last felt your arms around me. I remember being so excited. Pops was coming home from jail and I was gonna have all that I ever cared about back into my life all at once. Little did I know you were very sick and you didn’t have much time. When you passed I used to question if the lord was real. Because if He was, He wouldn’t take you away. I always wanted it to be a dream. To just wake up and you would be back here holding me close and laughing with me. But I understand that His timing is never wrong and He was just calling you home. I miss you dearly. I pray every competition for Him to allow you to watch me. Good or bad I just want you to see me. See who I’ve become and what I’ve managed to accomplish in the past ten years. Last you saw me, they were telling you and mummy I was troubled, I was smart but I wasn’t putting in effort, and everything else to put me down. I wish you were down here to see the hard work I put in and continue to put in every single day. What I wouldn’t give in this world just to see your face again. I love seeing you through pictures but I hate the fact that it’s the only way for me to see you. I wish I could drive over to your house and just lie next to you like we used to. Watching lifetime movies and living life normally. I miss the sound of your voice. “Leave my man alone,” you would say to anyone that was trying to get next to me, and I would retreat into your arms. Those same tears I cried at nine years old still fall for you. And as I continue to grow, gain, lose, and learn, I will also continue to live my life with you in my ear. It’s me against the world and I got you as my guardian angel. And while I wish I had more time with you and could make you proud, the thought of you watching from above keeps me going. In hopes that someday we meet again and I tell you how I changed the world. I pray that you continue to watch over me and push me to prosper. I wonder if you’ll even be able to recognize me when I get up there. I love you. #fuckcancer

Track and field has been a part of my life for six long years. In 2021, it took over my life for four of those years. @unewhavenxctf took their chances on a 17 year old kid who had only ran track for one indoor and one outdoor season. I still remember the day Coach Williams called my phone. Little did she know, she literally made my college decision for me in that moment. Before this, I never expected to run track in college. But I am eternally grateful for the opportunities it provided me. Because of track, I was able to travel and compete like I never did before. And once I got a feel for it, I wanted nothing more than to win. I never did get the wins I yearned for, a lot of sleepless nights and dedication I used to think went unnoticed. Lord knows how many times I wanted to quit. But the hard work I put in helped me become a man and I won lifelong friends, family, and memories worth more than any medal. For that, I am GRATEFUL and BLESSED. As a kid from Brockton who unexpectedly made it to the NCAA, I just hope I was able to inspire others and influence some careers.
