Earlier this week, I attended the 2026 Melanoma Research Foundation Annual Hill Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. We spent the first day learning from researchers, policy experts, and advocates about current priorities in melanoma prevention and research, and the next day meeting with members of Congress to advocate for these issues.

I was also honored to speak on a panel about mRNA technology in melanoma, sharing my perspective as both a lifelong cancer patient and a future physician on why protecting access to emerging cancer therapies matters for patients.

During our meetings, I had the opportunity to meet with the offices of John Cornyn, Lloyd Doggett, and Beth Van Duyne about key priorities for the melanoma community.

This year our key asks included:
• Modernizing FDA sunscreen regulations so Americans have access to safer, more effective sunscreen ingredients
• Robust funding for NIH, NCI, and the CDC Skin Cancer Prevention Program
• Maintaining $40 million in funding for the Department of Defense Melanoma Research Program, which has been funded at this level since 2022 and is critical given that veterans and active-duty service members face a significantly higher risk of melanoma due to UV exposure during service

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, yet only about 2¢ per American is spent on prevention each year. Advocacy like this is critical to improving prevention, research, and treatment.
