It was a great conversation! Let's keep it going. Thank you to Geelong Design Week @geelongdesignweek and the Creative City team @artsandculturegeelong for a platform that made a special conversation possible: 'Telematic Cafe: Designing a Festival' (October 8). Thank you to everyone who listened in, participated, and contributed. The atmosphere was friendly and focused. - An insightful, inspiring discussion unfolded. Presented by Telematic Cafe and Creative Occupation, the event invited Geelong's public figures and professionals to an expert discussion about a future festival, Geelong Experimental and Ephemeral Art Festival (GEEA). While discussing possibilities for GEEA, we explored the relationship between art and Geelong. Heartfelt thanks to the wonderful discussion partners! 💫 The first discussion, Art in Geelong: context and history, was shaped with Cr Eddy Kontelj (Deputy Mayor of the City of Greater Geelong) @eddykontelj, Matt Bonner (Artist) @projectionartist and moderator Dr Marita Batna (Curator) @maritabatna. The second discussion - Art and location (urban space) in Geelong developed with Sahn Cramer (City of Greater Geelong's Coordinator of Public Art & Culture, Urban Design & Place), Billy Kelleher-Jones (Hamilton Group's @hamiltongroupproperty Graphic Designer), and Dr Rachel Hanlon (Artist) @the_hello_machine together with moderator Marita. We will soon broadcast audio-video recordings of both discussions. Stay tuned for news from Telematic Cafe. Thank you & congratulations to Andy Davies for presenting his art and research as part of the event. Big thank you to the team: Kit O'Sullivan, Michael Morgan 📸, Jennifer McElwee, Jessica Laraine Williams, Ingrid Petterson, Terry Guida, Steve Juhaz, and lovely Geelong Design Week volunteer Lisa. Huge thanks to the incredible Beav's Bar hosts for such great hospitality in this iconic venue. --- Today, on AusArt Day - as we celebrate solidarity for the arts, it's also a good time to recognise that everything begins with a conversation. ❤️ by @maritabatna

How is truth, identity and meaning affected when digital images are manipulated? 💎👾 Creative Occupation collective's artists reveal concepts, technique and technology of two interactive art projects. Working with the collective Jennifer McElwee developed the installation Distorted Truth (first staged 2025). Jennifer will show the journey of this work, with a focus on light & reflection to provoke critical thinking about the manipulative digital media environments. Dr Jessica Laraine Williams will share the technical and conceptual development of For You Portrait, an algorithmically mediated artwork created through an international artistic research collaboration. For You Portrait invites audiences into a unique “staring contest” with a digital image of themselves. Jessica will talk of its core elements - gaze tracking, generative adaptation and the attention economy. Talks followed by Q&A and discussion. Session moderated by Dr Marita Batna, Creative Occupation. ✨ Self-Reflection, Digital Image and Posthuman Cartographies: Two Interactive Artworks on Friday - 2 October 2026, 2:15 - 3:15 pm 📍Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre, Victorian Regional Design Fair - Design Talk Book free @creative_occupation As part of Geelong Design Week ✨ Geelong Design Week is Victoria’s leading regional design festival, celebrating creativity, innovation and the power of design to shape better futures.  Image 1: Geelong Design Week Images 2-3: Jennifer McElwee & Creative Occupation's Distorted Truth at Third Space Gallery+Digital, Geelong. by @maritabatna
Unveiling the artworks of ‘Sensory Thresholds’, the artistic program of Geelong Fragrance Fair 2026. Curated for GFF by Marita Batna (@maritabatna), Creative Occupation (@creative_occupation). Artists four -- Jessica Lesosky and Sheshtin Honey  'Bodies of Water' Movement work (pop-up performance) As we move, beads of water will accumulate and sound happenings will begin. Through touch, we will activate capacitive synthesizers to evoke a world of droplets, water and oceans. Our bodies of water generate the soundscape. Body to body, body to water, water to body. Skin becomes shoreline, fingers tributaries, the spine a river; sweat, rain, tears and ocean become indistinguishable. Movement shifts between microscopic worlds, cells, droplets and condensation to the vast connected systems of tides, currents and storms. Water becomes a carrier of sensory and embodied memory: of places, bodies, weather, touch and experiences held over time. What does water remember, and what memories surface in us through its sound, scent and touch? Through slow, fluid movement, bodies shift through space, accumulate, connect, disperse and eventually evaporate. We are Bodies of Water Jessica Lesosky: Her practice sits at the intersection of performance, community, and care, exploring connections between body, environment, and belonging. She works across contemporary dance, improvisation, and dance/movement therapy, creating inclusive, process-driven spaces that support creativity, communication, and social engagement. Sheshtin Honey: Composition history includes live improv, Alt Classical, Post Rock, Electro, Appalachian Thrash & Doom. Recent compositions - “Rock Mass Comunitas” live improv score Platform Arts 2026, “I Am In A Parasocial Relationship With Britney Spears” Back to Back Theatre Geelong Arts Centre, May 2026, “Agincourt” film by Back to Back Theatre, ACMI co-commission 2025. Unveiling the artworks of ‘Sensory Thresholds’, the artistic program of Geelong Fragrance Fair 2026. Featuring art, performance, and video/film, the program explores the connections between scent, place, and human experience. Curated for GFF by Marita Batna (@maritabatna), Creative Occupation (@creative_occupation), we are delighted to present four exciting artworks by creative practitioners connected to Geelong. Artist three -- Anne Scott Wilson 'Flush' Installation (single channel video projection, acrylic disc, dimensions variable), originally exhibited as part of 'Fugitive States', ACU gallery, Melbourne, 2023. "A circle of colour, a slowly turning acrylic disc, and the unseen movement of the air. Every so often, by chance, they fall perfectly in sync becoming a small dance between light and matter that no one choreographs. It's the same feeling I know from dancing: moved by a force you can't see." About the Artist Anne Scott Wilson’s work tests the thresholds of light, data and transcendence. Drawing from ballet’s exploration of transcendence through repetition, endurance, and physical commitment, Anne’s work delves into the paradox of inhabiting a physical body while yearning to surpass its limitations—confronting themes of mortality in the process. Whether working with video, AI, painting, installation, writing, or photography, she utilises the tools available to her with a sense of spontaneity. Play is central to her approach, characterised by embracing failure. Through this iterative process of making and experimentation, her ideas are gradually revealed, evolving organically into her art. Artist two -- Jennifer McElwee 'The Blue Garden' Installation (recycled materials, natural materials, film and monitor) A winter reflection and the promise of spring. “I see the cornflowers are starting to emerge from the cold ground. I look forward to their clear blue flowers in Spring. The rosemary has pale blue blossoms on the strong green aromatic stems. The old lavender border, although cut back hard this and every year, will continue to flower abundantly. The new spikes are as delightful when young as when they are in full fragrant bloom.” ‘The Blue Garden’ is a whimsical storytelling of my garden in all its wildness and imperfection. A wondrous discovery every day.  About the Artist Jennifer McElwee shares ideas and concepts through her art, which uses many disciplines including drawing, sculpture, installation and film. Kinetics is an enduring interest and is often incorporated into her creations. In rituals of exchange, scent moving through the air creates a transient link to the spiritual. Vapours rising from these connections are highly symbolic. About the Artist Michael Morgan is an interdisciplinary artist exploring the themes of impermanence and humanity's relationship with nature, often drawing inspiration from the experiences and reflections within cultural and spiritual practices. While I'm not sure what to think of the news of Mona expanding to Thailand, here are some highlights of our recent experience of the Dark Mofo + Mona museum in the amazing Hobart. If I have to describe the feeling of this winter arts phenomenon it would be 'community'. With all the mind bending, silent, noisy, and bold artworks accompanied by decadent food experiences, a magic community experience is above all of it. In addition, i also have to note my appreciation and joy for the vast diversity of the art that this event&museum combination celebrates. Perhaps this is where all of the kinds of creativity and arts meet in harmony and with real power. ♥️ by @maritabatna
