📙 Hattie agrees, new bedding really does reset the vibe.
•
It's been a wild ride the last few months. But hey! I'm surviving, and Hattie is cuter than ever.
•
I talked a lot in my stories about the latest drama. But here are some good things that have happened lately that I would be remiss not to mention.
🫂 I've been able to rely on some really amazing friends.
📑 I started grad school and got high As in my first two classes.
📚 I started reading regularly again.
🥳 My sister got married!
•
Anyway, shout out to everyone who's let me know in the last few days that I am, in fact, not an unreasonable person. It's been greatly appreciated. 🧡 by @marithebookmaven

Hey @vikingbooks, I have a bone to pick with you.
•
Can someone please explain why we would dramatically change the cover design mid-series? Because this drives me insane.

Ramadan Mubarak, friends! 🌙 I have some exciting news...
🥁

🥁
I GOT ACCEPTED INTO GRAD SCHOOL TODAY. Still working out all the details, like how the heck to pay for it. But I am so excited to be going back to school for my Masters in Social Work. 🧡

📙 Cuddles and 🧊 puddles are all I long for in life. But alas, the horrors persist, and therefore so must we. Hope y'all are finding ways to stand with community and protect your neighbors. And if you haven't yet and need ideas, hit me up. ✌🏼

📙 There's just something about a used book store that will always be its own kind of magic.
•
My absolute must when traveling for any reason is a used or indie bookstore. You find the most special things that way. Black Letter Books in Stillwater, Minnesota did not disappoint. Found a couple Penguin classics to add to my collection. 🧡

📙 This book was a warning bell from 90 years ago and we failed to heed it—along with so many others.
•
The first 100 pages of It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis read like a play-by-play of the current political situation here in the U.S. Needless to say there was a lot of me staring wide eyed into the distance generally looking like this: 😬.
•
But I did get some good out of this book. First of all, a glimmer of hope that we will figure out how to beat the fascist beast. We're just gonna have to get real creative about it. And it's probably gonna get worse before enough people are jarred into action.
•
The most vindicating piece of this book, though, is the fact that it was published 90 years ago. Why is this vindicating? Great question, I would love to tell you. It demonstrates that we have been on the path to fascism all along. So many people these days are still stuck in the "this isn't who we are" mindset. Lots of "how did we get here?" and "if you had just voted for the other candidate." But this absolutely has been a part of who we are for decades, and we got here because one party swings right and the other capitulates. It makes me feel a little insane sometimes that others don't see that. So reading this book made me feel a little less crazy.
•
Anyway, you should read this book probably. Because it very much so IS happening here.

📙 One day, everyone will have always been against this. But I am continually horrified that that day has not come 730 days later. That day has not come millions of online views later, or nearly 700,000 dead later according to some estimates, or ICC arrest warrants later, or 250 journalists later, or countless mangled children later, or 92% of the housing later, or or or... Simply horrified.

All the chewy toys in the world and she came after my one escape from reality. Bit rude, if you ask me.

📙 For Refaat, whose death is a tale and whose voice will live forever.
September 23, 1979–December 6, 2023
•
I have a little strawberry charm on my bracelet to remind of Refaat every day. His hope, bravery, and conviction are a light that keeps shining, even though he's gone. May those who took his life be brought to justice. Inshallah lush strawberries and talented poets will one day thrive again in Gaza. 🍓
•
Fargo-Moorhead friends, I'll be dropping off some prints of this at Unglued (@ungluedmarket) soon. Otherwise hit me up if you would like one. Proceeds will be donated to The Sameer Project (@thesameerproject), which funds the Refaat Alareer Camp for displaced families in Gaza. If you don't want a print, I encourage you to contribute to The Sameer Project anyway.
•
Accounts to follow that carry the mantle of Refaat's work:
@electronicintifada
@mosab_abutoha
@susanabulhawa
@we_are_not_numbers
@gazawritesback

And undoubtedly so many more, but those are the ones I've been thinking about today. ❤️‍🩹
