POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
On Tuesday evening we held our AGM. Our fabulous Board and Musical Director presented their annual reports, celebrating the successes of the last twelve months.

Cyril Wood and Ruth Wilkinson are both stepping down as trustees after reaching their maximum permitted years of service. Cyril has tirelessly spent every rehearsal break opening the MKC shop, and has managed our finances meticulously. Ruth spearheads our hugely successful Come and Sing events every year, and creates our wonderful concert programmes; she will continue in those roles but retires from the Board. Both have supported and enhanced the choir’s growth and development over the last few years, for which we are enormously thankful.

We now welcome our newest Trustees, Pam Furnis (Treasurer), Gill Wood (our current Librarian), Joss Spear and Jo Wallwork. We’re thrilled to have you.

This year’s AGM also marked the end of Glenys Bloomfield’s reign as Membership Secretary; a post she took up in 2014. We give heartfelt thanks as she also stands down after reaching her maximum number of years as a trustee.

We also welcome our wonderful new Community and Membership Lead, Liam Friend!

We’re so excited to welcome these excellent humans to our already fabulous Board of Trustees. Onwards and upwards!

Introducing our Convention sessions:
🎺🎻 Working with Instrumentalists with @mark.conductor

Drawing on his extensive experience of working with amateur and professional choirs and orchestras, Mark leads a practical and interactive discussion for choral conductors working with instrumentalists for the first time, or the first few times! Exploring the challenges and opportunities of conducting instrumental ensembles, both with and without a choir, the session will cover score preparation, rehearsal planning, communication and troubleshooting. There will be opportunities to share experiences, discuss common pitfalls, and explore ways to make the transition from purely choral conducting as smooth and rewarding as possible.

Two extraordinary 20th-century choral works. One beautiful Oxford setting.

On Saturday 24 October, Oxford Pro Musica Singers return to Exeter College Chapel for a programme pairing Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir with Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem.

Martin’s vivid, rhythmically charged writing meets the luminous, deeply expressive sound-world of Duruflé’s Requiem, performed in the composer’s arrangement for organ.

📣Announcing the MK Chorale 26/27 Season!

Eternal Light

Lili Boulanger: Hymne au Soleil
Morten Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna
Howard Goodall: Eternal Light

‘Where words fail, music speaks.’
Hans Christian Andersen

This remembrance season, MK Chorale presents three remarkable works from France, America and England that each explore illumination, solace and hope. Opening with the blazing and arresting brilliance of Lili Boulanger’s Hymne au Soleil ☀️ (Hymn to the Sun), the first half of the concert then focuses on the serene beauty and shining harmonies of Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna. Howard Goodall’s remarkable Eternal Light forms the second half of the concert. In the spirit of Brahms’s requiem, Goodall aims to provide solace to the living who mourn, and pairs extracts of traditional texts from the Requiem mass with some of the finest English poetry of the last 500 years.

Join us for what promises to be a moving and contemplative journey through music united by the desire to always find the light. 💡

Christmas with the Chorale

Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on Christmas Carols
Rutter: What Sweeter Music
and much more!

Join us for our annual Christmas celebration and kick off Christmas with style! With audience carols, seasonal readings, plenty of humour, some surprises, and the all-important mince pies and mulled wine, we promise to bring some seasonal magic to all the family.

Come and Sing: Belshazzar’s Feast

Join our Musical Director Mark Jordan and Assistant Musical Director Alex Aitken for a rewarding day focussed on one of the masterpieces of early twentieth-century English choral music - Walton’s mighty dramatic cantata Belshazzar’s Feast. The day will culminate with an informal performance to friends and family at the end of the day.

Few choral works give singers the sheer adrenaline rush of this remarkable work that is often cost prohibitive to perform. Walton’s musical language combines thrilling counterpoint with jazz-inflected rhythms, jagged syncopations, fiery rhythmic vitality and explosively brilliant choral writing.

An immediate sensation at its 1931 première, the work ultimately became a landmark of by @mark.conductor

I thought I’d make a start on some score prep for concerts coming up over the next 12 months. I think it fair to say it’s going to take rather more than a bank holiday weekend…

A flavour of the season: Beethoven 9, Duruflé Requiem, Goodall’s Eternal Light, Rachmaninov Vespers, Mendelssohn Elijah, Vaughan Williams A Sea Symphony, Will Todd Mass in Blue, Martin Mass, and Lauridsen Lux Aeterna.

Looking at all of this, I’m reminded of the old adage: you can never have too much of a good thing. I’m beginning to think this may be less an adage and more a professional philosophy.

And this is by no means the whole season. I’ll advertise the concerts as they come up, but there’s plenty more in store.

Seems the older I get, the bigger I go. Already planning Gerontius for next October and, not pictured, a Belshazzar’s Feast Come and Sing in January. Do I need therapy?
