🍸 Day 111 with Mocha, and her very first Puptail! 🍸

If you know Mocha, you know that she is the biggest foodie around. Foster Dad often jokes that you could summon her out of thin air by crunching an apple, and that she would disappear just as fast when the apple is finished. (A girl needs her beauty sleep, you know?)

With how much Mocha loves food, she is, however, lacking in the drinking department and has been known to routinely and actively refuse a drink of water. We have gotten creative to get her to drink more but I am sure that is a problem a lot of pet parents can relate to and face daily!

That is when @puptails_hk told us that they might have ✨something✨ that could inspire Mocha to enjoy her drinking time as much as she does her eating time. They kindly gifted us Barkeritas (their original lamb-based Puptail) since Mocha is not allowed chicken. An instant hit for Mocha who finished her whole fancy puptail glass and would have happily had second or third right there and then but we encouraged her to drink responsibly and save some for later. 😂

If your dog has a pawty or if you want to include them in celebrations or cocktail hour, this is a lovely drink for them to have with many options to explore especially if they are allowed chicken! (And let’s not forget, an easy and enjoyable way for them to hydrate a bit more!) Mocha can vouch for the lamb-based Barkeritas! Thank you @puptails_hk!

💧 Day 101 with Mocha, and her drinking habits! 💧

Mocha is one of these dogs who willingly chooses dehydration any day of the week. To combat that, every meal comes with a soup base usually the water I boil her salmon with or plain room temperature water when the salmon is all done! Luckily for us, if her meal is in the water she will drink it but otherwise, she hardly ever drinks at home.

Mind you her bowl is freshly cleaned and the water changed every single day but rarely consumed. Over the last three months and a half, we have gotten to know her pretty well and know that in desperate times, she will drink a few sips when outside or finish the whole water bowl at home twice a week unprompted. When that happens everyone stands still! No moving a muscle! No distracting her and she will finish the whole bowl in one go.

We can sometimes add a few fruits to a shallow bowl of water and she will also take a few sips but the main goal is clear: fishing for fruits! Once the fruits are gone so is the drinking.

Let’s not forget this one time we are at a cafe for two hours and she was having the time of her life. Think kid running around the playground doing laps. Then one dog owner whipped out their portable water bottle to hydrate their own dogs (who was unsurprisingly not interested) but Mocha was. She went up to them, wagged her tail, they offered her some water and she decided it was her time to shine and downed the WHOLE bottle. 🤣🤣🤣 She is such a funny character!

🍨 Day 95 with Mocha, who likes to be scooped now! 🍨

When Mocha first joined us, we quickly realised we would have to carry her a lot, between her bad leg, her limited stamina but unwavering will to walk for, and frequent need for showers, she was bound to spend some time in our arms. Luckily for us, Mocha weighs two peanuts and one feather so she is super easy for us to carry but we didn’t want her to feel like she never had a say in the matter and to warn her when it would happen if it was inevitable. So we introduced “scoop” and if it will happen there will be no scoop arms just the word “scoop” said out loud to tell her: “I will carry you now.”

On walks, however, which she greatly enjoys, we wanted to give her more agency and choice so we introduced “scoop” with extended arms to tell her: “you can choose to be carried or continue walking by yourself.” For weeks, she chose to run ahead regardless of how exhausted she was. Recently, however she started wagging her tail and coming to us when she wants to be carried and our hearts are just melting. Isn’t she the sweetest?

I cannot believe that there has been zero small dog versus big dog privileges in this house. The amount of times we have carried 20 kg Samson and 30 kg Coffee. If you are too tired to keep going, you are getting carried! 🤣

🐣 Day 83 with Mocha, Daddy’s girl part 2! 🐣

Let the Father’s Day related reels begin! Little chicken felt a little bit better today. It was a big hassle to wake up this morning but very happy while she was out!

We keep joking with Mark that we get a new Mocha every ten days or so and for this rotation, the chicken is not feeling her breakfast selection. Always troubleshooting, we ordered her some new raised bowls to see if her neck is fatigued from bending down so much since she is in more pain than usual overall.

Her new meds seem to be working well so far in managing her pain. Still no scratching and biting (hurray for cytopoint working!)

The weather has improved and so has her redness. She is also back to wearing little t-shirts on her walks as she was getting red around her harness area and that has solved that issue.

She has been feeling so much better that we made a quick detour to our local dog park where Mocha is always so happy to stand among all the dogs but today, one had the audacity to give her attention and smell her repeatedly and she took it personally. 🤣 We left promptly to her disappointment because I do not want to push our luck with time spent outdoors and her face was quite dry so shower time + coconut oil.

Mocha received her beloved lamb spaghetti as remuneration for her continued efforts in our reels and she was satisfied with this form of payment. She is now sleeping and snoring and practicing how to say “Daddy” in her dreams.

We love you little Mocha! Get all better soon!

🐥Day 82 with Mocha, Daddy’s girl! 🐥

Most girl dogs we have looked after have been Daddy’s girls and Mocha is no exception. The good thing for Mummy is that Mocha is happy being walked by everyone including Mumny which makes planning and organisation much easier!

First things first, Mocha’s vet visit went well she got some samples taken from her abscess site and was sent home with some medicine to manage her pain. Overall, she is much more active today and even though she still needs breakfast in bed, she is back to sleeping 20 hours rather than 22 which for us makes a huge difference. Thank you to everyone who reached out to encourage her! She listened and felt inspired to feel better!

With Father’s Day coming up, we are happy to create some content to celebrate Mark and Mocha’s special relationship. 18 dogs fostered and we have loved them all so dearly but some of them stay longer and the bond deepens day by day. I am Mummy bath time and Daddy is food and exercise. Mocha will run to hide between Mark’s legs when it is bath time because she doesn’t like it even though she does exceptionally well and must endure it daily. She also doesn’t like being carried and I carry her often: to the bath, and out of our building to avoid accidents. She tolerates all that so well but some days she runs to her Daddy for protection in hope that she can avoid the dreaded bath time.
