What a way to spend a Wednesday night, tucked up inside The Cluny at a sold out Brooke Bentham gig.

šŸ“· | Sandro & Juliette Tonali

I spent some time with Sandro Tonali at home as he received a gift from his wife, Juliette. It was all very relaxed and low key, which made it feel even more special to be there to capture.

There were definitely a few nerves. No real setup, no chance to plan, just walking into their beautiful home and making the most of the time I had.

The piece by @linesbehind told a brilliant story of Sandro’s life. It was great to see how much it meant to both Sandro and Juliette.

Super appreciative of the experience.

Some weeks just feel like the universe is nudging you in a certain direction.

When I started this photography ā€˜thing’ in August 2025, I set myself one quiet goal: one day, I’d be shooting a Sam Fender gig.

Fast forward to March 2026 and in the week I met Tom and Drew at one gig… I then met Joe, Dean and Sam at another.

I’m still chasing that dream but last week it felt like I could at least be on the right path, even if I have no sense of direction.

One day, she’ll be too old to remember what it felt like to be nine.

And one day, I’ll probably miss this version of her more than I can imagine right now.

So I’m starting work on a new project…

This is called ā€˜Nine’.

A film about growing up, told entirely from the perspective of my daughter.

I wanted to find a way to preserve her childhood, but also to understand it. To capture more than just the moments we photograph and remember, but the thoughts and feelings that exist underneath them.

Her dreams. Her fears. The things she loves. The things she doesn’t understand yet. Her view of the world around her.

As parents, we spend our lives watching our children grow up, but we rarely get to see the world exactly as they see it.

So this is my attempt to capture that. Before childhood becomes memory.

And hopefully, one day, she’ll watch this back and remember not just what life looked like, but what it felt like to be her as a kid.

More than 1,000 people have watched the first glimpse of a short film I’m making called ā€˜Nine’.

ā€˜Nine’ is really about a Dad trying to hold onto a version of his daughter while he still can.

Not just what she looks like at nine, but how she thinks. What she loves. What she worries about. The things she doesn’t understand yet. The way she sees the world around her before growing up starts to change it.

As her Dad, I know I’ll remember the big things. Birthdays. Holidays. First days. Milestones.

But I think the things I’ll miss most are probably the things that don’t feel important right now. The way she talks. The questions she asks. The way she laughs. The version of her that only exists at this exact point in time.

At nine years old, 1,000 views felt enormous to her. At one point, she asked me if this meant she was going to be famous.

It made me laugh, but it also summed up why I’m making this.

Because in another 9 years she won’t be my little girl anymore. She probably won’t remember half of the things she says or thinks now. And I know I’ll miss this version of her more than I can comprehend.

I hope years from now we can sit down together, press play, and remember not just what being nine looked like, but what it felt like in her own words and that’s why I’m making this.

This next little scene was filmed in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea where we live. I laughed during the edit when I noticed the timing of the man walking into frame and looking up. It wasn’t planned at all, but somehow he stood exactly where he needed to be.

Maybe that’s becoming part of this film too. The moments I’ll value most might be the ones I never thought to plan.

I’ve been photographing music gigs since November and, despite shooting a lot of shows in that time, there are plenty I’ve never charged for.

Whenever I mention that, people are often quick to say, ā€œYou should be charging.ā€ Maybe.

But the truth is, not everything has been about money.

When I first decided to shoot live music, I made a conscious decision to focus on experience before income. I wanted to learn by my own mistakes at my own cost, understand what it takes to consistently deliver great images in a live environment and build a portfolio I could be proud of.

The photos have been valuable, but so have the conversations. Meeting artists, promoters, sound engineers, and other creatives has given me an exclusive ticket to every gig I’ve been and photographed. You can’t buy that experience; it’s priceless.

My goal has always been simple: build enough experience that when an artist hires me, I know I can deliver exactly what they need.

So for now, I’m focused on learning, building relationships, growing my portfolio, and becoming the best photographer I can be.

The money may come, but right now I’m investing in something more valuable: experience, relationships, and a foundation that will last far longer than any single payday.

Imposter syndrome can make things awkward as fuck.

My first gig was Heidi Curtis at The Cluny 2. I’d been there countless times before as a punter, so the venue itself felt familiar. But turning up with a camera in my hand felt completely bizarre.

Even though it was all arranged in advance and those in the know knew I was meant to be there, I still remember walking in and seeing people chatting, moving around confidently, checking their gear, and generally looking like they belonged. Meanwhile, I was doing my best to look calm while thinking, ā€œWhat am I doing here?ā€

To make it worse, anyone who knows me will know I am inherently introvert, which is not exactly ideal when you are thrown into a room full of people. Despite two decades of sales experience, my usual ā€˜showtime’ version of myself had completely fucked off, and I was left standing in a pool of anxiety, clinging to polite conversation with Thomas, the sound engineer, just to settle my nerves and project to the room that I too belonged, despite not believing a word of it.

Looking back, that was my first real experience of imposter syndrome in photography, and if I am honest, it still turns up at nearly every shoot I go to. The strange thing about imposter syndrome is it convinces you that everyone else has been handed some secret knowledge that you never got. You look around the room and assume everyone else is more experienced, more confident, more talented, and more qualified than you are. Sometimes it’s true and other times it just comes down to confidence.

I think that imposter syndrome is more common in creative work because we are constantly putting ourselves in situations where we are learning in public. Every shoot can feel like a test of whether we are actually good enough and the photos don’t lie.

What I have learned over the last few months is that feeling like an imposter does not necessarily mean you do not belong. Sometimes it just means you are growing into a version of yourself that’s never existed before and that’s uncomfortable.

So the next time you’re feeling it, remember me. Because the chances are you are not the only one in the room thinking it.

From behind the camera, I’ve noticed something about Newcastle’s music scene.

Since November, I’ve spent countless hours photographing live music at The Cluny, one of the North East’s most important grassroots venues. And as a photographer, I get to see a side of live music that most people never do.

When you’re in the crowd watching your favourite artist play a brilliant 40-minute set, it’s easy to think that’s the whole story.

But the performance is only a small part of it.

Long before the doors open, artists are soundchecking, unloading vans, carrying gear, setting up stages and solving problems most audiences never know about. Long after the final song, they’re packing everything away and heading home.

And for many musicians, the it doesn’t end there. The following morning, they’ll be back at work doing their 9-5 day job.

This was something that just didn’t register with me before I started getting involved in music photography.

According to the UK Musicians’ Census (2023/24), more than half of musicians rely on income outside of music to sustain their careers, while 43% earn less than Ā£14,000 a year from their music. Spending time side-stage at these gigs, those numbers feel very real.

The more time I’ve spent around Newcastle’s music scene, the more I’ve come to appreciate just how much dedication sits behind every performance. It’s also something that rarely gets acknowledged or talked about on social media.

That’s one reason why supporting local artists and venues through photography matters to me.

Because without the artists willing to make those sacrifices, the venues willing to give them a stage, the people who pay to listen, and the creatives who help document it all, there would be no story to tell.

As a photographer, posting just one photo feels vulnerable.

I think a lot of photographers feel that.

Many photos are lost in carousels designed to hold your attention. But the downside is the shots I favour most get buried and are rarely seen.

So this is just one of my favourite photos of the year.

Harrison, lead singer of Leeds indie band Gravy, closing out a song on the floor. Completely unplanned, completely in the moment and I was lucky to catch it, positioned on a balcony at The Cluny 2.

At 38, I grew up as a teen through the last Indie wave with bands like Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Kasabian, The Libertines… and it’s been incredible to see Indie connect with a whole new generation.

Through my eyes, composition and editing aside, this photo perfectly captures the essence of the indie scene in the UK today.

Gravy | The Cluny | 2nd April 2026

High energy performance from Gravy, an action packed Leeds based Indie band at The Cluny, supporting Feet on their UK tour.

B&W fell together nicely so I went with it throughout the whole set with the odd red hue shot as a nod to their existing visuals.
