Cesar Mariano & Cia - São Paulo - Brasil (RCA 1977)

There are not many records that I would rate 10/10 but this one definitely fits that category. I first heard the track Fabrica in a Mark Pritchard (Troubleman) mix in 2004 and was totally blown away. When I found out it was on this album I went on ebay and bought myself a copy for around $50 which was quite the sum to spend at the time but I needed to have it. The rest of the album turned out to be equally great and I have been revisiting it a lot lately. Not a dull moment to be found in these grooves. Total jazz funk fusion heaven.

Last weekend was Record Store Day and the big fair in Den Bosch. I don't care for RSD so you won't find me lining up at the crack of dawn but I went to Den Bosch on sunday with @jazzdigger. As usual, the amount of great records was staggering and so were the prices. Went home with three nice records in total. I aquired this beautiful first pressing Lee-Way in a trade with @vinylspot. It's one of my favorite Blue Notes and it sounds like thunder!

Pharoah Sanders recorded a couple of albums for the Dutch Timeless label in the late 80s and early 90s. Moon Child is from 1990 and even though the original first pressing is a Dutch release I never came across a single copy. Usually I'm not too crazy about the sound of records that were recorded in this period but this one is lovely. Pharoah can cause a bit of aural onslaught as most of us know but on this recording he takes a more laidback approach. This was reissued a couple of times over the last few years but it's back in print now through Music On Vinyl. This pressing sounds excellent and comes in a textured sleeve.

This is a fantastic record that I've played a lot over the past week. I remember buying this one at the time because I liked the Land and Hutcherson combination on their other collaboration San Francisco (Blue Note in 1971) so much. On this session drummer Billy Hart and the excellent Buster Williams from the Mwandishi band join in.
It's a pretty raw recording and according to the liner notes, the intention was to record the album as close as possible to the band's live sound. This will probably scare away the audiophiles but I think it is one of the reasons why I like the brooding atmosphere of this record so much. It's enjoyment from start to finish but if I had to pick a stand out track it would be Ode To Angela on which the excellent bass work of Buster deserves extra attention.

I wasnt aware of this particular pressing until @elleboog68 posted his copy a while ago. This title was originally released under Oliver Nelson's name on the New Jazz label but this UK pressing seems to put more emphasis on the role of Eric Dolphy. For good reason as this is a great session in itself but the angular Dolphy makes it standout.

The cover of his debut album from 1960 pictures a youthful Wayne staring at you. Even though he was "already" 27 here, he looks like he was just fresh out of high school.

On "Introducing", recorded for the Vee-Jay label five of the six tunes are original compositions. In 1960 he had just joined the Jazz Messengers outfit, a group that would greatly benefit from both his playing and his compositional skills.

I don't play this album very often. Not because it is not worth it, but because I first became acquainted with his later work. Speak No Evil was his only album that my local library had in their collection at the time, so that became my introduction to Wayne Shorter. To me, that is still his perfect masterpiece and I tend to gravitate towards that period the most.
That being said, I greatly enjoyed playing this again today!

I was going through some old boxes and came across this book which I bought 30 years ago. Living in a small town with a poorly stocked library in the pre-internet days, this was a very important and helpful book to me.
I had just been introduced to the Blue Break Beats and Blue & Groovy compilations but had no idea what the original Blue Note album covers looked like. I must have gone through this countless times, until the pages came loose.

Jack McDuff's Moon Rappin' and Ronnie Foster's Two Headed Freap.
Two finely matured jazz funk classics. Recently reissued in the @bluenoterecords Classic Vinyl Series which is great as the originals (if you are shooting for a clean copy) are becoming increasingly expensive.

Waltz for Debby has been on my list for a long time. These magnificent Dutch editions, in stereo or mono, are a worthy alternative to the American first editions. I would even recommend to buy these if you are looking to get a top quality pressing without breaking the bank, although that has changed rapidly over the years.
Hopefully we'll see a high quality reissue program for his Riverside catalogue somewhere in the near future. This music should be available and affordable.

This amazing copy came in a trade for which I have to thank @vinylkatten 👌 . It plays perfectly and makes for a wonderful addition to the collection.

Last year I came across a collection that held just about everything The Pretty Things ever commited to vinyl and I managed to pick up beautiful copies of S.F. Sorrow and Parachute. The same collection also included the obscure albums The Pretty Things recorded for Music Library label De Wolfe under the name Electric Banana. The A sides contain the vocal tracks with the instrumental versions on the flip. Apparently some tracks were used in movies and series. I read somewhere Dawn of the Dead and an episode of Better Call Saul for instance. Cool stuff.

Amidst the regular jazz posts, this is a fresh find that also needs to be shared. Now it's not that special to find an English mono edition of Sgt Pepper's, if it weren't for the fact that this copy doesn't seem to have been played. It is hard to imagine that someone must have thought: "I don't really like what I'm hearing, let me put it on the shelf and never take it out again".
The record is in pristine condition and the cover shines like a mirror.

I got rid of most of my Beatles records after purchasing the superior mono box in 2014 but I'm happy to add this to the collection again.
This is a 1969 pressing so strictly not a first but still....
The sound on this is stunning and it remains one of the greatest achievements in popular music.
