We converted this system to a 4 pipe Priority Domestic Hot Water set up with integral divertor valve. This allows for fast hot water recovery when needed and a separate - always altering low heating flow temperature- controlled by the easy control with weather and load compensation. This should save our client 10-20% on gas usage throughout the year along side an increased level of radiant heat comfort.

This set up is very simple to wire. 2 communication cables from the easy control (or wireless), 2 communication cables from the cylinder sensor. Mains cable via the cylinder overheat stat to comply with G3. No hours of wiring an S plan, no zone valves to go wrong and no auto bypass to set up.

System fully converted to a pressurised set up and all TRV’s replaced. Great water pressure allows for great showering just from standard showers with expensive, noisy power showers removed.

Heat pump install.

I installed this Oso Unvented cylinder with integral buffer (used as a volumiser) plus the controls in this very tight airing cupboard for John @cruickshankheatingaircon.

@tradie_tales did a lovely job on the underfloor heating.

Johns designed a great open loop set up with a mix of underfloor heating and radiators. 40 degree design temp- on weather compensation.

50 years in the trade. Thousands of customers helped. Today, Steve officially retires.

Across Banbury and the surrounding villages, Steve has spent decades keeping homes warm and building @smh_gas_specialist into a name people trust. Honest advice, a job done properly and looking after customers have earned him that reputation, year after year.

These photos give a glimpse of those 50 years, from the early days to handing the business over to us at L J Plumbing & Heating. We’re proud to carry his work forward and grateful to Steve for trusting us with it.

Mark will be continuing with us as part of the L J team, bringing his experience and a familiar face for the many SMH customers he’s worked with over the years.

Steve, thank you for everything you’ve put into the trade and the local community. Everyone at L J wishes you a long, happy retirement.

After 50 years of looking after everyone else’s heating, you’ve more than earned some time with your feet up. Enjoy it! by @mark_hall_heating

Another rural home off oil, with a heating system designed around the whole property.

This Grant Aerona 9kW air source heat pump serves new radiators in the historic house and underfloor heating in the extension, all designed around a 45°C flow temperature.

Following an in-house heat loss survey, the open-loop system was carefully planned to balance the different heating needs of both spaces. That meant getting radiator sizes, underfloor pipe spacing and controls right.

Weather compensation adjusts the flow temperature as the outdoor temperature changes, helping the system deliver heat efficiently and keep the house comfortable.

Plenty of thought behind this installation, with @smh_gas_specialist involved throughout.

In house heat loss survey and open loop design at 45 degree flow temp for both new radiators and extension underfloor heating for high efficiency and comfort

£9000 BUS Grant deduction and no VAT to pay along with big savings on the clients future bills year on year

Team effort from @lj_plumbheat and @smh_gas_specialist

The design was a bit challenging balancing radiator sizes in the existing historic house and the underfloor in the low heat loss extension running on the same weather compensated flow temperature. A good control strategy was implemented including limit stats for some of the underfloor actuators, differing spaces for different rooms etc - as the extension has a new AGA.

How well does a heat pump work in an old house?

After 5 years of learning from the best I designed and installed my first Air Source Heat pump with a full heating system. After living with it in our 300 year old home for over a year and a half I’m blown away with how well it works. The cheapest and best way to heat our home.

Constantly warm in every room and a full year- whole house energy bill of £1547 for heating, hot water, cooking, washing and every thing else. No solar, no battery. That’s a family of 4 in a 5 bedroom historic house (250m2) with predominantly solid wall construction. (Note- Partial year on the OVO heat pump tariff and partial year on a standard rate tariff).

2025 full year SCOP shown as 5.6 (note that comparing Viessmann SCOP with independently monitored Viessmann performances - real world SCOP likely to 4.6-5.6). That’s at least 460% efficiency over the year for heating and hot water.

From July, a £9000 grant is available when replacing an oil boiler (or LPG boiler). £7500 for a Natural Gas boiler or direct electric heating replacement. I would almost always install a heat pump system on a full renovation like this or a new build. Retro fit can be more of a challenge but the vast majority of UK homes are suitable.

What about the installation cost? Renewable installs are no VAT so that’s 20% saved on all the materials and labour. With the £7500 BUS grant I received I estimate it was £2500 cheaper than an oil heating system or £4500 cheaper if a new oil tank and trenching to be installed. I think it would be a similar cost to a new Natural Gas boiler and system of this size, but you have VAT saving.

The plant room area was a luxury space to work in- most systems only need an airing cupboard inside.

The system is future proof and running costs could reduce even further if we get solar and or batteries.

Thanks to @damon_bphr for the MCS, commission day and technical phone support when installing the kit for the first time.
