I learned a lot when visiting El Salvador this year. I have so much more than my mother ever had. The countryside of El Salvador taught me survival and what it’s like besides the social media heavy downtown city. There was beauty in how happy these people were. Where $10 went a long way. Where you learned to hold on to the water that you had because you didn’t know when it would turn off. The beauty of A/C, a newer fridge and the beauty of something as simple as a strainer that is standard in the United States of America. Chalatenango had been through so much. Attending the 50 year anniversary and celebration of Reubicación #1 was a blessing. The community shows up for each other. Everyone knows everyone. The love they all have for each other and the dedication and loyalty. It was so beautiful to witness. I hadn’t been in 13 years or more and seeing that they have grown was beautiful. My mom cried when the fireworks appeared because this city had nothing compared to what is has now. The Abuela’s and the Abuelos made something out of nothing. They survived by farming and creating a culture that could only be united. They considered what they could do and made things better for their children. My abuela used to give my old toys to this neighborhood and now those children have grown with me. Some in college, some with beautiful homes in San Salvador. It’s so beautiful to witness a city that cares, even when it seems they shouldn’t. That should mope and be angry. This community isn’t afraid to make things happen and be at peace and in love with one another. They all need each other and see the value in that. Muchasismas gracias El Salvador.
