A year later, I came back to this one with a new crop.

This remains one of my favorite photographs I’ve ever taken—and, unexpectedly, it became by far the most viewed photograph I’ve ever shared. But how one feels that a photograph should be cropped can change with time.

I photographed this enormous bull in the Alaska Range, surrounded by tundra at the peak of its fall color. He remains the largest bull moose I’ve ever encountered, with five brow tines on one side and four on the other.

A year later, I found myself wishing I had given him a little more room and let more of that autumn tundra become part of the photograph. So I went back to the original file and started again.

Same moment. A slightly different way of seeing it.

Some mornings in Alaska feel less like a hike and more like a gift. A few days ago I crossed paths with this male spruce grouse. At daybreak today, I returned to the same stretch of forest and found him again. For a few quiet minutes, I was able to watch him display among the moss and trees of his home. Yes – he even jumped up on my backpack- and at one point when I was laying flat really still- he actually jumped on my head for a split second!

Moments like this are just one of the reasons I love Alaska so much.

Churchill’s magic doesn’t end when the sun goes down. Situated beneath the auroral oval, this little town on Hudson Bay is wonderfully placed for the northern lights. On this night, curtains of green and pink appeared through a break in the clouds, framed by the dark silhouettes of spruce trees. Photographs by @markamccaffrey.

A moment I won’t forget: lying on the ground beside a stream that flows into Hudson Bay as a polar bear stopped to drink. Nothing between us but open ground and water. Through my lens, I saw its reflection appear beneath it.

Churchill wasn’t only about the polar bears.

This red fox stepped into the last of the evening light, with the autumn tundra glowing around him. Photo by @markamccaffrey.

Not every polar bear emerges from a world of white.

This young cub slowly appeared through the autumn colors of the Churchill tundra—first a face, then a glimpse, and finally he stepped fully into view. His mother and brother remained asleep about 25 yards further away, but curiosity drew him closer through the rain.

Riding the rising tide in from the ocean, this seal followed the migrating salmon into the mouth of the river—and seemed genuinely curious about the strange creatures sitting along the riverbank (photographers instead of the bears he was used to seeing). What was particularly funny about the encounter was that @sstone_images had just moments before predicted that a seal would probably show up following the salmon we were seeing migrating into the river mouth.
