It’s a nail biter, I had to come down and help my buddy. Ten years ago, when I was doing a month long vision quest of my own on the AT, Jamil found me in the middle of the Vermont woods during a relentless rain storm and lifted me up and I’m stoked to return the favor!

The competition ends TONIGHT at midnight and these guys are like chess masters with their sleep strategies, pacing, and pure lunacy.

Not to mention, today is Jamil’s 40th Birthday! Tempe/Phoenix runners, let’s line the streets, it’s gonna be a party! 🎉

Some Days are Amazing
.
Not every run or ride has amazing light or weather or even scenery. But some days the same trail you’ve done before is transformed by the conditions and the light. This is the CCC trail up the Middle Fork - a ride I’ve done many times - but this day was special. Amazing light and fog - everything was brilliant and sparkly. Always carry a camera and be ready to stop and make a photo. The memories and the pics are worth it.

Fall in the Cascades
.
Fall is fleeting. Everyone (myself included) wants to see the golden larches and the fall colors. I did a short loop traverse in the Alpine Lakes of Chiwaukum Lake, Larch, Donald, Eileen and Julius Lakes. Beautiful golden grass and ferns and red huckleberry and the smell of decaying vegetation and a coming change in seasons. Beautiful day out - did not see a single person. Touching to see the same meadow that we visited 21 years ago with our little family (last photo) - you can even see where the trees line up perfectly matching. I love fall - maybe cause it’s so fleeting.

Crater Lake
.

The deepest lake in the US at 1,949 feet, formed 7700 years ago when a volcanic eruption blew the top off the mountain and the caldera collapsed leaving a huge steep-walled caldera. There is no outlet from the caldera and over the centuries the rainwater and snow melt have filled the basin to form Crater Lake, one of the cleanest and purest bodies of water on Earth. I did a morning hike along the rim to Watchman Lookout - it was a beautiful morning (cold!) with amazing sunrise and morning light reflecting off the deep blues.

Front row for my first Goose show! Brought the mini mighty RX1! Was a fantastic two sets - solid 3 hours of music. Some deep grooves and good light show. Can’t wait to see them again.

Film Developed

These are all scans from film that I developed at home. I got tired of the waiting and the cost. I get that development costs chemicals but I prefer the control and enjoy the learning. Already made some mistakes. But enjoying the process.

I’ve been biking a lot more lately - which means I have had running injuries. (Even though I really do like riding - I REALLY love running). I have always carried a camera with me on my outings - and when biking it’s even easier to carry a nicer camera - either using the frame bags or I got a new cycling camera strap that gives me easy access to my RX1 on my back. Here are 10 while taken biking. 1,2,4,5 are from a dawn patrol in Fall City, 3,9,10 are from a morning ride around Jerome Idaho while on the road and 6,7,8 are from a ride up to Poo Poo Point on Tiger Mountain.

Pass through Chair Peak & Melakwa

Denny Creek is a side drainage off of I-90 near Snoqualmie Pass that connects into the back country of Alpental and Snow Lake. The area has a very alpine feeling at Chair Peak Lake and Melakwa Pass - even though it’s a scant 6 miles from the trail head. It is a steep climb up to Melakwa Pass (pic 2) and then its a steep descent to Chair Peak Lake (ice axe and maybe even crampons required early in the season) and then cross country travel around the bowl above Snow Lake, along the ridge to Gem Lake (Pic 1) and then from Gem following the established trail down to Snow Lake with its hordes of hikers and back down to Alpental. I always stash a bike and then bike back to the car at Denny Creek trail head. I love traversing this trail - one I’ve been doing for almost 20 years - I try to do it at least once a year.
