On April 19, 1996, Nanci Griffith was invited to perform with Hootie & The Blowfish at "The Horseshoe", on the campus of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, for MTV Unplugged. The show aired on April 22, 1996, one day before the release of the album "Fairweather Johnson", on which Nanci was also invited to join on some tracks, recorded between October and November of the previous year.

Her soft, delicate voice works as a perfect contrast to Rucker’s deep and powerful tone. In songs such as "The Earth Stopped Cold at Dawn", "So Strange" and, especially, in "Gravity of the Situation", the result is one of the most memorable duets in the entire history of MTV Unplugged. This was a song they had previously recorded for the project "Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation", on which Nanci recorded the title track with Darius. That same year, they began a beautiful friendship.

Darius first heard Nanci on the radio through the song Mary & Omie, and from that moment on became a fan of hers. According to him, he was deeply impressed by the way Nanci told stories through her songs.

This show also features Glen Phillips (Toad The Wet Sprocket), whose band has a song called "Nanci" (a tribute to Nanci Griffith and Loretta Lynn), featured on the album "Dulcinea (1994)".

This makes this 1996 MTV Unplugged have a brilliant aspect: there were two artists on stage — Darius Rucker and Glen Phillips — who were already declared fans of Nanci before ever working with her. Her participation was not merely as a special guest, but as a true artistic reference for both of them.

Currently, this episode of MTV Unplugged is available for streaming on Paramount+ and Prime Video.

Later, Darius would participate in Nanci's album "Blue Roses From The Moons (1997)", performing a duet with her on the re-recording of "Gulf Coast Highway". The album was produced by Don Gehman, the same producer of "Cracked Rear View" and "Fairweather Johnson".

1996 was quite a year for Nanci. In my opinion, it was one of the most interesting years of her career. I am fascinated by this period. During this year she was still promoting her latest studio album, "Flyer". taken in University of South Carolina - Columbia by @markbryanmusic
