Most actors have never set up a Google Alert. It takes about two minutes… Set one up for your own name. Pro tip: Put your name in quotation marks (for example: “Heidi Dean”) so Google looks for that exact name rather than separate mentions of Heidi and Dean. Then set a few up for casting directors, filmmakers, producers, agents, managers, coaches, and other industry connections. When they book a project, win an award, or make the news, you’ll know. And you’ll have a simple reason to reach out and say: “Congratulations!” Some of the best networking happens simply because you’re paying attention. One lazy thing. Two minutes. If you’re trying to build relationships on social media here’s one feature most actors completely overlook... Instagram’s Favorites Feed 📲 Think of it as your networking feed. Instead of scrolling through everyone you follow, you can create a private list (up to 50 accounts) of the people you most want to stay connected with like casting directors, filmmakers, fellow actors, coaches, agents, managers... anyone you want to keep on your radar. To set it up: 📱 From your Instagram feed, tap Instagram logo at the top left. ⬇️ Select Favorites. ⭐ Add up to 50 people (some accounts can now add 100) Now, when you check your Favorites Feed, you’ll see posts from those people first, making it much easier to engage with them consistently. I like to think of these as virtual coffee dates. ☕ A thoughtful comment, a genuine congratulations, or sharing someone’s exciting news can help you stay connected in an authentic way…without ever asking for anything in return. Relationships aren’t built in one conversation. Now you can simply press and hold a post, tap Reorder Grid, and move it where you want it. And Yes! I know some of you got this drag and drop grid feature a year ago. If you’re spending any time building your social media, you need to spend two minutes protecting it… Getting hacked isn’t on my vision board and I’m guessing it isn’t on yours either. 😂 Turn on two-factor authentication today. Think of it like a door with two locks: 🔒 Lock 1: Your password. 🔒 Lock 2: A unique code sent to your phone (or an authentication app). Even if someone gets your password, they still can’t access your account without that second lock. On Instagram, go to: ☰ (three lines) → Accounts Center → Password & Security → Two-Factor Authentication ⭐ BONUS TIP: Most social media apps let you choose between text message verification and an authentication app. The authentication app is the more secure option, but text messages are still far better than no two-factor authentication at all. Two minutes today could save years of work. These days, we only get 5️⃣ hashtags… and how we use them has changed A LOT since I first taught this concept waaaay back in 2015. The good news? It’s actually waaaay easier now. 👀 When choosing hashtags, look at your post and ask yourself: WHO, WHAT, WHERE WHO → who is this post for or about? WHAT → what is the post about? WHERE → where does it connect geographically (if relevant)? Hashtags are not dead… they just work differently now. Think of them more like keywords that help Instagram (and even bigger search engines) understand and categorize your content.
