Here’s a western that I don’t believe gets enough attention. The plot is very simple, but handled expertly. Jean Arthur, as a young frontier wife, was 50 when she made this film! Jack Palance, lean, mean and clad in black leather, was perfect as the gunfighter sent to kill Shane. This movie has been endlessly copied by other westerns films and TV shows, and was even parodied unmercifully in the 1960s comedy-action show, “Batman.” A very influential film that many younger people have never seen. by @markforrorin_fred

It’s with great sadness that I have to report the death of Robert Duvall, 95, on April 15, 2026. The Oscar winning actor was present for many of the great films of the 20th and 21st centuries, including “To Kill A Mockingbird,” “Bullitt,” “Godfather Parts I and II,” “Apocalypse Now,” “Tender Mercies,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and many, many others. His legendary portrayal of the mad Col. Kilgore in “Apocalypse Now” gave him one of the most memorable lines in film history: “I love the smell of napalm in the morning…” Besides acting and films, one of Duvall’s offscreen passions was ballroom dancing. Having married Luciana Pedraza, a champion ballroom dancer from Argentina, he converted one of the barns on his Fauquier County, Virginia farm into a dance studio. Duvall could be seen occasionally in nearby Fredericksburg, Virginia, where this poster also lives. by @markforrorin_fred

I just saw an AI reference to Dick York’s work on The Twilight Zone that was completely wrong. I’d like to set the record straight. Dick York was NOT a guest star on “What’s in the Box?” That was William Demarest and Sandra Gould, who played the second Gladys Kravitz on “Bewitched” (probably where the association came from). Dick York DID guest star on two episodes of The Twilight Zone: “The Purple Testament” (Season 1) where he played the commanding officer of another officer during World War II, who believed he could see when his men were about to be killed. The other episode was “A Penny for Your Thoughts” (Season 2) about a man who acquires the ability to read minds when he drops a coin in a newspaper seller’s box and it stands up on its edge. The Refuse Fascism rally in Washington, D.C. yesterday brought together several thousand people at the foot of the Washington Monument. Compared to other movements like Antifa and No Kings it seemed smaller, but when we took to the streets, it formed a mile-long line along Constitution Avenue all the way to the Supreme Court and the Capitol. There were people there from at least a dozen different states, some coming from as far away as California. by @markforrorin_fred

Watching the 1979 version of Nosferatu right now. The movie was a Franco-German co-production that starred Klaus Kinski as the “vampyre.” Unlike the 1922 movie, this version was performed in English. Like the 1922 movie, the 1979 remake was set in 1838, rather than in 1890, as the Bram Stoker novel is. It was a lavish production, which was in direct competition with the British-American co-production of “Dracula,” starring Frank Langella as Count Dracula. This film was made in the same year, 1979. However, the Frank Langella version was set in 1912 rather than 1890, as Jonathan Harker drives a 1912 Hispano-Suiza. by @markforrorin_fred

Took another bicycle ride from Virginia to Tennessee June 7, 2025. This is the last in a series of rides I’ve taken over the years to all the states (including the District of Columbia) that border Virginia. This weekend, I rode from the national park campground near Cumberland Gap National Historical Park (actually located in Ewing, Virginia in Lee County), to Cumberland Gap, Tennessee (population 315-330), taking the Little Tunnel and pedestrian walkway over US 25E into Harrogate, TN (pop. 4,355), continuing south through Tazewell, TN (pop. 2,860) to Thorn Hill, TN (pop. 2,235-2,237). I rode 58.8 miles through Claiborne and Grainger Counties in Tennessee and across Little Sycamore Creek and the Clinch River (both pictured). Also pictured: Cumberland Gap City Hall; Tennessee welcome sign and historical marker at the end of US 58 on the border between Lee County, VA and Claiborne County, TN; the campus of Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TN; welcome sign for Tazewell, TN; cliffs where a pass was blasted through mountains to make way for US 25E South, between Tazewell and Thorn Hill. Thorn Hill was my turnaround point. The weather wasn’t very cooperative this weekend, raining almost constantly. However, on the second day, a window of several hours opened up to allow me to do the challenging, mountainous ride. I arrived back at the park campground about an hour before another torrential downpour. I hope you’ve enjoyed my posts about these long-distance state-to-state rides as much as I have enjoyed doing them! It took three bicycles and eight years to accomplish this series. From pandemics to an out-of-control car driver destroying the second bike, it’s been an informative, enjoyable, challenging and very very wild ride! 🚲 by @markforrorin_fred
