Adidas ZX8000 ‘Rave’ 😊

Pair No. 1 of 4.

So here it is; my very own shoe that I was fortunate enough to design during my trip to the archive in Germany last year.

What was the story behind the design? Well here goes…

The Second Summer of Love was a late 1980s social phenomenon in the United Kingdom which saw the rise of acid house music and unlicensed rave parties. Raves were held in empty warehouses and progressed to fields all around the uk. Flyers were posted around towns and cities with vague information as to their location.

The symbol of the time became a smiley face after the London crowd picked up the design when it was posted on one of the flyers. The smiley face became the symbol of the movement, revellers would soon become adorned in smiley t-shirts and badges.

The choice of shoe was very important from a comfort perspective due to the marathon amount of dancing endured. The original Zx8000 Aqua colourway was a shoe of choice for many, not only from a comfort perspective, but also they fit well with the bright clothing choices at the time.

Growing up in the 90’s, I was always fascinated by this culture and later inspired me to become a DJ which lead to me playing in clubs in and around the Midlands and Ibiza.

The design I put together was not just a nod to the time and culture but also a nod to the original aqua colourway with this being a reverse of the original.

- The smiley face features underneath the shoe aswell as on the sock liner 😊

- The lace jewels are reversible. The reverse shows a picture of a dove, a very notable image at the time 💊

- Behind the tongue features a hidden stash pocket to carry all your…rave essentials 😉

- The sock liner features images of the newspaper print aswell as the sad faces represerting the downess put on the scene by the biased media.

- The lace ends feature the dates 1988 and 1994.
1988; the year that rave was born.
1994; the year the criminal justice and public act made raves illegal in uk.

While unlicensed parties were put to an end…rave culture will never die 😄✌🏼🎶 💊💙💛🕊️

Fantastic night down in London to see the relaunch of adidas Originals with Offspring. Great to see many old faces, put faces to names and meet many more new ones.

What can I say other than that was amazing! Met some truly incredible and inspiring people and felt genuinely welcome from the moment we arrived.

Huge thanks to @offspringhq @aman_tak and all the guys that made this happen at @adidas @adidasoriginals

The shoe design will go to production and will take a fair few month for everything to come together. Once everything is finalised and I have the shoe in hand,I will post a full run through of the design and why I chose the colours and features that I did.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to do this and I know just how lucky I am to have had this experience.
