If the Great Lakes are a hidden treasure of surfing, then the Georgian Bay is a small gem tucked in a corner of that loaded chest. Collingwood, Ontario is nestled between cliffs and the southern shores of the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron, boasting a rugged, yet quaint scene with year-round activities like skiing, biking, hiking, climbing, and of course, lake surfing.

For those unfamiliar with the bay, it is the body of water nearly separate from Lake Huron, almost forming its own Great Lake. It is contained entirely within the Canadian borders of Ontario. Two hours north of Toronto, it is the go-to area for a north swell. The local set features mostly flat shale/rocks and some nearby sandy beaches. Locally, there is a point break that shapes both lefts and rights. Up the coast, you’ll find river mouths dumping waves and twenty minutes east - the world’s longest freshwater beach.

Many would be tempted to think a small, maritime village would be without standouts, yet there is no shortage of talented surfers and athletes in the bay. The community is a mix of resilient women, men and groms at all stages of skill on all types of boards. There is a melting pot of board sport professionals who have competed and travelled the world surfing, who often act as mentors teaching safety, wave forecasting and sharing stoke.

June through September hold flat spells, but Collingwood offers so much, you might not notice. If you have a longboard and you’re willing to surf 2-3ft, you’ll get by without too much off time. When locals are out of the water, you can find them at any of the go-to craft breweries, coffee shops and restaurants in the charming downtown. The Georgian Bay Surf Club is the epicenter for the surf scene, connecting people to the culture. Their space welcomes surfers and non-surfers alike for food, drinks, clothing, and surf gear.

On November 29th, we gathered for an unforgettable afternoon of fireside chats, home-cooked butter chicken, backyard games 🎯 🪓 🪵, sauna sessions, cold plunges, and powerful conversations.
