My mother was 24 when she sat for this portrait, just prior to being married in 1949 .

It's because of her that I'm in New York, doing what I'm doing. Both of my parents contributed mightily to who I am, but it was my mother who inspired me from an early aged to be curious and develop my artistic skills. "No paint by number for you.! Create your own! Finish what you start." These were the words that still echo in my head.

She was well educated, read all the time, and was curious. She was compassionate. Yet also possessed a toughness about her to endure what life threw at her. She didn't see the value in complaining.

Thank you, mom for your inspiration and your belief in me. I know you're with me every day. by @markluedeman

When words and drawings aren't enough to convey my ideas, I go into 3D mode and make a cardboard mock-up.

Nature is the true source of inspiration and after a long winter, it's nice to remind ourselves that winter always turns to spring. My favorite harbinger is to "force" some pear branches into blooming. So revitalizing!

I was recently asked how many steps went into making these cabinets. After looking at my notes, it came to just over 200, with multiple steps being repeated when making the drawers and the decorative hardware.

It was battle of patience and persistence to bring these cabinets into being.

How they were made.
Most think I turned them on a lathe, but in reality, I used some jigs, my saws and a belt sander to create the shapes.
The most challenging task was drilling the stainless steel tubes. Incredibly hard material!
