POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I created this 18″ x 24″ poster as a reminder to keep dancing, whenever and wherever possible. And yes, it references the excellent BeeGees song, which gave us those immortal words.
If this is something you’d like to keep mindful of, or you know someone who’d dig it, I’m selling them for $25 each on my website. That includes shipping and handling. These are regular old posters, not fancy archival reproductions, but if you frame them under glass, they will last for years and years. Link in bio.

Something new.
I'm not exactly a wildlife artist, but I’ve begun a series that feature animals that intersect with our built spaces, and tend to suffer the consequences. Recently a friend posted a trail cam shot of a jackrabbit looking sort of freaked out, and it gave me an idea for a painting. I started this when wildfires were raging not far away, so I wanted to incorporate that in a way that made it ambiguous whether it was a sunset or a fire on the horizon. The text in the background is the story of Henny Penny (Chicken Little), overlaid with warnings about increased wildfire potential in the west.

Some twenty years ago I did this series of paintings about hubris and interventionism. I placed Dick & Jane type characters in settings taken from Iraq war photos. It was political, but I hoped to come at the subject somewhat sideways, so they could be open to interpretation and hopefully not be JUST political. I’m not much for re-posting my older work, but just the other day I was re-doing my website and it struck me that these pieces were weirdly timely again. 😐

Titles: “Misunderestimatin” “Aerial Maneuvers” “Operation: New Friends”

"My best paintings are always the ones that are hardest for me to surround with words. For this show, I’ve purposely tried to not overthink the images I’m creating, or to get too wrapped up in creating rationale. It’s my way of getting “Perfectly Lost” in the creative process. As always, I’m interested in exploring psychological states among my subjects, but this time I’m allowing free associations among the image references to just see where that goes. Naturally, that has led down a more surrealistic, dreamlike path where there are interesting complexities for me to explore. "

@MarkPennerHowell is a featured artist in our current exhibition PERFECTLY LOST, on view now through January 17, 2026. The gallery is free and open to the public Tues-Sat, 11AM-5PM.

Quick recap of PERFECTLY LOST, an exhibition that beckons us back to our innate curiosity - a call to explore freely and rediscover wonder in the everyday.

Through installation, paintings, and mixed media, six artists reflect on how our environment can gently shape us, offering a space for healing, inspiration, and transformation. Rooted in the richness of the natural world and guided by a deep sensitivity of color and material, their work evokes moments suspended beyond time and place - inviting us to slow down and simply be.

This group exhibition features the work of Holly Wong, Sharon Strasburg, Sara Pittman, Ana Zanic, Eileen Roscina, and Mark Penner Howell
