A botanical mandala on fabric Flower🌼

Flower pounding (also known as tataki-zomé or hapa-zome) is the easiest and most direct way to print natural flower pigments into fabric.

I did this my own way, but if you want to do it the conventional way, see instructions below. Have fun 🤩

Materials Needed

Natural fabric: 100% cotton, linen, or silk work best.Fresh flowers: Vibrant blooms like marigolds, cosmos, geraniums, or pansies.

Hammer or mallet: A small household hammer or rubber mallet.Barrier: Wax paper, parchment paper, or a paper towel.

Hard surface: A scrap piece of wood or a cutting board to protect your table.

Optional mordant: An alum pre-soak helps the natural colors bind permanently to the fibers.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Prepare the fabric: Lay your clean fabric flat on top of your hard wooden surface. If you want the print to last through washes, pre-treat the fabric in a warm water and alum solution first, then let it dry.

Arrange the flowers: Place your fresh flowers face-down on the fabric and gently spread out the individual petals into your desired pattern. Remove any thick stems or hard centers that might tear the cloth.Cover the design: Lay a piece of wax paper or parchment paper directly over the arranged flowers. This keeps the plant juices from sticking to your hammer.

Pound the petals: Using your hammer, gently tap from the outside edges of the petals inward toward the center. Strike evenly until you see the dark color bleed visibly through the back of the petals.

Reveal and set: Peel away the paper and gently lift off the squishy, crushed plant matter. Let the fabric dry completely, then heat-set the design by ironing it thoroughly on the appropriate heat setting for your fabric type before washing. by @marksteenadamson

$Hold the Line I came carrying everything I thought I might need – boards, batteries, cameras, a whole life plugged in. But the wild asked me to put it down and listen. Twelve stones waited beneath my feet, each marked by a white vein – twelve years of letting go, of waking and choosing the line again. I laid them end to end and saw how grace had moved – slowly, quietly, through every fracture. At the shoreline, the tide spoke in heartbeats. The white line of the waves flared, then vanished – each pulse a gift carrying me forward. Twelve yellow flowers rose from scorched ground – bright with the promise that joy returns, that life is always preparing another celebration. I pressed their colour into canvas, their meaning into my heart. Footprints crossed the dunes before me. Then, in one stone, two white lines crossed. Not a crossroads, but the Cross— beneath every step, steady, leading me home Special thanks @sidryland by @marksteenadamson$

Cheltenham Folk

In this photographic study, I explored the traditional ideas people have of my hometown, Cheltenham. The aim was to express the beauty and character in everyone regardless of who they are. The goal was to produce a balanced reflection of the town, primarily known in the UK as the location of GCHQ, the Government Communication Headquarters, the heartland of horse racing, and home to members of the upper classes.

There is something special about everyone regardless of who they are. Some have stories to tell and others are in a hurry. Some of them are homeless, some are wealthy, some are more educated or than others, but most of them are just ordinary, everyday, hard working fun loving people.

Angel of the Ranch - The Yard

I thought I came looking for a rancher.
Instead, I found a brother.

The desert preached before
either of us spoke
through wind, stone, silence,
and a God too vast
to be confined by the walls we build.

His prayers carried echoes of ancient songs.
Mine remembered distant African plains.
Different languages.
The same longing for the Creator.

We spoke of crosses and ceremonies,
of traditions that wound,
and traditions that heal.
Of losing ourselves,
then finding Christ without forgetting
our names.

Somewhere between the dust and the sky
I realised I wasn’t witnessing two stories,
but one.

I left wearing silver on my hand,
but carrying something far more precious -

the quiet certainty
that grace never asks us to abandon
who we are;
it simply teaches us
who we were created to become.
