This morning I went on a journey without leaving town.

Nicolas Bouvier was a Swiss travel writer, perhaps best known for his 1963 book “L’Usage du monde” (The Way of the World). He was also a terrific photographer, and I’ve been meaning to go and see the exhibition devoted to him at our modern art gallery for weeks.

That’s Nicolas on the left in picture three with his friend, the artist Thierry Vernet, and the Fiat Topolino in which they traversed Europe and Asia. Also in a more brooding, bearded mode in picture four.

Many of the pictures are from Japan, and you can see his writer’s eye for detail and ambience. Sweeping vistas are not usually his thing. This is a reporter, and he has a very particular angle.

Tiny moments of beauty and symmetry. Stories waiting to unfold.

Yesterday it rained heavily all morning, then late in the afternoon the sun came out and the light was warm and buttery. The first real feel of autumn. So I took a few snaps in the garden.

Some snaps from around home in La Drôme. The house in pictures two to five was the setting for a memorable jazz performance recently - lovely people, too. The others are from a quick trip to Valence. The gentle and sunny weather is perfect at the moment.

In the intense heat it’s tempting to think that summer has become an uncomfortable, even dangerous season. So I decided to exit reality for a while and idealise summer through art and illustration.

I’ve tagged all the artists (the two missing names are @thomaswschaller and @ivanterestchenko.official, pics 10 and 11) and the order of the pictures doesn’t imply any ranking or preference. I love all of these.

A relaxed lunch in the shade with our friend Chacha aka @cguerpillon at the Bistrot de Venterol, in the village of the same name. Difficult to believe that havens of peace like this still exist. And yet… taken in Le Bistrot de Venterol by @marktungate

It’s strange being born in one country and living in another. After a while, both of them feel odd - and equally intriguing. Anyway, some clips from our trip to the UK, with a quick finale at the Gare de Lyon. We were out of steam by then.

I’ve always liked a harbour. Fishing boats, lobster pots, gulls shrieking and wheeling. Times have changed, but just then it didn’t feel like it.

The beauty of Bradford-on-Avon.

When I was 11 years old my parents moved us from the London suburbs to the unremarkable town of Trowbridge, Wiltshire. Luckily, there were a number of remarkable places nearby, including Bradford-on-Avon.

With my best friend Tim @thegreenalbum who was born there, and who I’ve known for 47 years, we’d go swimming in the local pool and stalk the hilly streets. A bit later there were canal-side pubs.

It was lovely to explore it again with Tim, his wife Karen and my wife and son, who’d never been there before. They’re from France, of course, and this is quintessential England.

Last handful of snaps from Arles, including our annual Sunday lunch - and a limoncello - at Le Bistrot Arlésien. Portrait by @geraldinedormoy of course. You’ll find my favourite images from the photo festival in Stories.

I reckon I take this picture every year.

La Mécanique Générale. Steam trains were built here once: now the vast industrial warehouses are exhibition spaces.

Some snapshots from our annual visit to Arles for the “Rencontres”, the amazing photography festival that takes over the city, turning churches and public buildings into galleries. I’ll share a few of my favourite exhibitions in Stories soon - but meanwhile here’s some ambience.
