At Walthamstow Trades for author Daniel Rachel’s talk on musics fascination with all things Nazi. The obvious, Bowie, Joy Division & punk all feature but Lemmy & Lennon... Lemmy showed off his Nazi collection to a LA film crew, while Lennon’s Nazi memorabilia was kept secret until his ex wife Cynthia died. At this point all John’s items were sold off including self portraits of him sieg heiling, signed ‘heil John’ 😳
Former Clash manager, the worldly Caroline Coon was beside Rachel on the panel and chucked in some tricky questions of her own. Poor fcuker was getting shot from both sides.
Also…. Coon who reported on punk and sociocultural shifts in the 70s for Sounds and Melody Maker received a personal dedication in her mentor Germaine Greer’s best seller ‘A Female Eunuch’. She’s learned. Rachel handled her challenges along with Forrest’s questions with grace and wit. A good event. taken in Walthamstow Trades Hall by @marky_mark586

I didn’t get to see a Panto this Christmas but PIL is the next best thing. Lydon as the Wicked Witch of course. The whole band are perfect for what PIL set out to do, the menacing dub bass and McGeogh style glimmering guitar can be no other group taken in The Forum, Kentish Town by @marky_mark586

Just the 45 years then for this debut screening of A Certain Ratio live at Hurrah, NYC (1980). The recording is through a single lens that zooms and owns the viewer into a previous life. The life of a fledgling band who through their own admission were still learning their instruments.

ACR’s set:
Felch, Suspect, Oceans, And Then Again, Forced Laugh, The Fox, Shack Up and Winter Hill

Hurrah was on the live circuit for emerging new wave/post punk bands in the early 80s. Through 1980-81 the club had an in-house film director and self styled Video Jockey Merrill Aldighieri. MA filmed many of the bands who played Hurrah including New Order, Bauhaus, Magazine, Delta 5 and Dexys Midnight Runners.

Merrill’s name has been buried in folklore for so many years, it was a real coup for @rocknrollbookclube17 to have both her and ACR at a rammed Walthamstow Trades Hall for interview by Dave Haslam. All films are available for download at www.clips.free.fr

The third pic is an ad of Hurrah’s upcoming shows displaying the cancellation of Joy Division’s gig on 21-May-80. This show was rescheduled to September for a three piece New Order set, filmed of course by Merrill Aldighieri. Can’t say I’ve heard of any other band on that ad! by @marky_mark586

2010 and it’s #Freebass in Glasgow for the hotly awaited tour featuring the three bass gods of New Order, The Smiths and Stone Roses/Primal Scream. A note fixed to Kings Tuts front door tells us Andy Rourke hasn’t made it. A bad start but inside #Hooky and #Mani are ready and waiting. Half way through the set, between two songs, Hooky prick-teases the full house with the familiar bass riff of Love Will Tear Us Apart. Big cheers. Mani, smiling and shaking his head, flashes back with the opening chord of She Bangs the Drums. Massive cheers. 1-0 Mani 🎸 taken in King Tut's Wah Wah Hut by @marky_mark586
