SNEAK PEAK: The kids from @wozerskatemag are about to change the world for the better. I know I’ve fallen in love with them.

I had the absolute privilege of hanging out with these beautiful people, dressing them up and taking pictures as they whipped up the ghetto skate park in Wellington.

I only expect great things.

More to come from this amazing shoot soon in print and online.

I have never, ever been athletic in my life. Shit at sports, never did anything remotely resembling exercise.

But when I arrived at rehab 11 years ago, in withdrawal - I was shaking, sweating and in a bad way. That’s where I met Dean.

Fresh out of prison, Dean had lived a rough life. Both his parents had died of drug overdoses, and he’d spent most of his life in and out of abusive homes, institutions and jail.

When I met him, he was almost 40 and determined to get sober. He was also super fit. I looked up to him, and one day he gave me an exercise programme, rehab style: get up at 5am before breakfast and chores, run up and down the rehab driveway, do push-ups, squats and star jumps. Take a breath. Do it again.

At first, a couple of laps of the driveway nearly finished me. But after a few mornings, I noticed I felt, well, different. Everything seemed more peaceful and the the effects of the damage I had done to my body from drug and alcohol abuse, seemed to fade.

Dean finished treatment and went home. Later, I learned he’d relapsed and taken his own life. I was heartbroken.

I joined a gym after rehab. Then I started running. Movement is now a huge part of how I look after myself, physically, mentally and spiritually.

I train because I can. I run because I can. And sometimes I remember Dean when I do. I remember that this disease of addiction is a killer, and I don’t take it for granted that I’m still here.
