POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
👋👋Hello! I'm Marlies, 31 and live in the Netherlands but I prefer to read & post in English. I mostly read thriller- and horror books and I'm 100% a mood reader. 📚

I started my bookstagram October last year, with no idea what I was doing (tbh I still don't). Lately I felt like engagement on my posts has been pretty bad and that's a shame because engagement with other readers is what makes this fun! 🌻

For some time, I wanted to try some different content other than only reviews, but I have no idea where to start. Even with all your beautiful posts as inspiration, I can't seem to think of fun content to make. 🙊

So, from now on I want to try some things that are simple, but still fun and engaging. Maybe even some reels (scary!) 👻

So this re-introduction seemed fitting to announce my regeneration. I am a noob in social media with a full time job, so bear with me! 🐻

Hopefully my page will breathe some new life soon and I look forward to yapping about books with you! 👀

❔️ Do you recognize this? What helped you out of your bookish midlife crisis? 😄

In these photos I was visiting Riga National Library, which is quite an impressive building. Thanks to my boyfriend for capturing the perfect photo as a profile picture! 📚

There was also an interesting little exhibition on the history of books and print in (Latvian) language. If you're ever in Riga, take a walk over the bridge and visit the library! And visit Lido obviously 👀 by @marlease.reads

Introducing my new Rating System! ✨️
I used to avoid reviewing a book with ratings, until now!

I always find it so difficult to categorize a book in 1-5 numbers. So, I made this Rating System as a guide for myself, so you can see what I mean by a rating. Rating is still very subjective and based on how much I enjoyed a book! 👻

❔️Do we rate alike or is yours completely different?

🪡Did thou hearest? The Stitch Witches is out! 🧵

Thanks to Quill & Crow Publishing House and the author Krissie K. Williams for providing me with an ARC-copy though NetGalley!✨️

Set in New England, 1700’s, a Puritan village is shaken up by a mysterious death. The Stitch Witches is a historical, fast-paced and gripping story that captivated me immediately.

I read in the acknowledgements that the author is a historian. Krissie knows how to enlighten readers about Puritan customs and hypocrisy while horrify them with this great witchy story as well. As a reader you get to know a lot of characters, some with funny names. Sometimes I had a bit of difficulty to keep apart whose who. This book made me root for Settie so much, I also loved the unlikely bond between Settie and Orphelia.

I was glad this was a witchy story less focused on fantasy elements, but purely a horror- historical fiction. I thought Slewfoot was quite fantasy-heavy in comparison.

The only thing I’d like a bit more, was some background/ lore on the Stitch Witches. They’re still a bit of a mystery. Also, a bit more information on the witch trials that occured 30 years ago in the book. The ending was quite quick but very satisfying.
Definitely pick this one up today if you’re looking for a perfect Halloween book!

✨️Book- review of Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova ✨️
Swipe for synopsis and review!

I am going to keep this review very short: What a beautifully bizarre book this was. It explores the topic of what it means to be human and centers mostly around dealing with grief and letting go. The story is told in four parts, each from a different POV of a family member.

I’m not sure if I would say this is a horror but there are definitely horror-elements and some body horror. I wasn’t expecting so much kink, but it does fit this story anyway 🙂

If you need a story to get you out of your reading slump, get emotionally invested and root for the monster: pick this one up! I expected something very different but was pleasantly surprised.

✨️ September Recap ✨️

These are the books I read in September! I liked the Creeper and 20% off best. I think Wake Up and Open Your Eyes and Between Two Fires didn't click for me for some reading as it did for most people. But that's fine!

I got a bunch of physical books this past week to fill up ny new bookshelf. A flatlay is coming of those soon 😊

❔️What was your favorite book this month?

My first!! Two weeks ago I assembled this beautiful rotating bookshelf I've been eyeing for some time! ✨️

The Creeper by A.M. Shine 👻
Swipe for synopsis and review!

This was the runner up to be picked for the @dontreadalonebookclub this month, but the most-voted book was not really available easily (or expensivily) in my country so I decided to read the Creeper anyway!

Also quite relieved today as I had a hospital appointment that I was dreading for weeeks, ugh. Going into the weekend relieved 🙌

Get 20% Off Your First Demon This Halloween 👹
By Michael D.A. Clarke

Swipe for the synopsis and my thoughts below!
Thanks to the the author for providing this copy! And the good thing is, it is already out! ✨️

Need something or someone out of your life? Go to a graveyard and scream Whasssuuuuup!!
After that the possibilities are endless.

This book is definitely unlike one I’ve ever read. I loved to read about the different revenge missions and setting those perpetrators straight in each gory way. ‘’Get 20% off’’ is written humouristically but the problem it addressess is very real such as physical and mental abuse. The revenge stories were sooo satisfying, and I think sometimes people would’ve liked such a company at their disposal.

If you looking for a short, very entertaining read that leaves you cackling on the one hand and slightly horrified at the other, check this book out! I am looking forward to part two.
