The sport that built and shaped me into the person I am today, thank you basketball. As this chapter of my life closes, my heart is full of thankfulness. I am grateful for the ability to play this game alongside my best friends for the last 12 years, for coaches who wanted and pushed us to be the best people on and off the court, and for a community that traveled countless miles to support and encourage us. Lastly, my family who were my biggest cheerleaders and the first ones to pick me up on the days that were hard.

For the past 18 years the gym has been my home away from home. Whether that was watching my brothers and sister play, the breaks my family and I spent up there playing games, the hours alone shooting, my dad rebounding for me and helping me achieve the goals I had set for myself, or my mom driving me up there, it was always a place I could go to escape. It was my home.

Starting in pre-k, being at the state games and hearing “it is championship Saturday, and you have made it to the big house” was something I always wanted to experience for myself. Not many teams get to, and I knew that. I also knew what it was going to take to be one of those teams. It started then.

Freshman year was full of heartbreak and goals that were not achieved, personally and as a team. Looking back, it was needed. It led to sophomore year, walking away with the gold ball and my dream of being at the bottom of the dog pile coming true. Although that year ended in the best possible way, it was the hardest for me. After unexpectedly losing my Pa before playoffs, my foundation was shaken. My team picked me up, showed me grace, and guided me through a time that was dark.

As junior year rolled around, I knew things were going to look different, but there was never a doubt in my mind that we couldn’t make it back to the state tournament. My teammates stepped up into new roles and put in the work that was needed to achieve the goals we had set. We made it back to the big house. It was a year of growth.
