On Sunday a bird pooped on my table outside, and then I saw another little pale thing drop onto the table. I figured I was under a nest, but saw that the pale thing was a fresh little lady beetle (ladybug) that had just emerged from its pupa! Its spots and wing covers were pale, its wings were still hanging out, and even its legs and underside were yellow. Within a half hour it had managed to fold its wings up under the wing covers, and the spots were slightly darker. After 2 hours, the spots were black, and there was a slight flush of color starting to develop. Legs and undercarriage were still yellow. Then it was time for me to leave. Boo hoo! By now it’s bright red and flying around looking for aphids and other prey.

There’s so much cool nature happening all around us. Go outside and see what you can discover!
And happy autumn! ❤️

Earlier this week I was locking up my bike and noticed a honeybee on my bike rack. Turns out, not only was it not a honeybee, it wasn’t even a bee! The striped eyes got my attention, and when I looked more closely, I noticed paired toe pads and tiny antennae- this was a fly! Specifically, a type of hoverfly (also called flowerfly) that eats pollen and nectar. There are quite a number of different flies (and even species of beetles, moths, and ants!) that are bee or wasp mimics- they have evolved colors/pattern and shapes that make them look like bees or wasps. The adaptive advantage is pretty clear- not many predators want to mess with something that can give them a painful sting! I’m including a Robber Fly that I posted about 2 summers ago and a Brown-haltered Mimic Fly I found a couple of months ago, both blocks from my house.

A little reminder to slow down and pay attention- you never know the fascinating discoveries are right under your nose!❤️

This July 11th take a deep dive with Beers Books as we are joined by Ellen Litwiller & Josie Iselin, in conversation with Marni Fylling, to discuss their wonderful book “The Mysterious World of the Bull Kelp Forest”, available now from the great Heyday Books! Event starts as 7PM.

“A mesmerizing tour of our underwater forests and what they can teach us.
Offshore and out of sight to most beachgoers on the North Pacific coast is a wondrous habitat: the bull kelp forest. Each year, tiny bull kelp saplings explode into sixty-foot “redwoods,” until winter storms tear them loose and fling great tangles of wrack on the shore. While they flourish, these underwater forests harbor abalone, salmon, and rockfish, and they entreat cormorants and murrelets to hunt among their thrumming canopies. Meanwhile, fluffy-furred otters and pizza-sized sea stars gorge on spiny urchins who, if left to run rampant, will devour a kelp bed down to barren wasteland. In The Mysterious World of the Bull Kelp Forest, Josie Iselin profiles thirteen species—with stylish illustrations from Ellen Litwiller—to be our ambassadors to this undersung world. She explores how their interspecies dramas play out in eight coastal regions, from Alaska to central California, exploring instances of interdependent, compromised, and resilient coastal ecosystems. An array of sea creatures feature in these pages, as well as shorebirds that connect land and sea. Land-dwelling humans are also deeply implicated in this saga—by turns beneficiaries, agents of harm, and stewards of these subtidal sanctuaries.” taken in Beers Books by @marnifylling

I just spent a month in New Jersey, visiting dear friends and tagging horseshoe crabs (more on that later, hopefully!). So many heralds of spring there, and then when I returned home.

Head outside and see what treasures you discover in your neighborhood!❤️

I had so much fun at the California Natural Resources Agency’s Earth Day celebration! So many people came to my table to talk about urban nature- all the amazing plants and animals that live amongst us, even in big cities. Everyone loved looking at a Common Daisy under the scope. A single daisy is not one flower but an “inflorescence” made up of many flowers: each little yellow bump in the center is a flower (called a disc flower), and each “petal” is also a flower (called a ray flower)! Under magnification you can see the tiny disc flowers (they start opening from the outside first) as well as the reproductive parts of the ray flowers. When a pollinator comes to visit a daisy, Cosmos, or sunflower, it pollinates many flowers in one stop, often producing hundreds of fruits/seeds. Each sunflower “seed” is a fruit! Dandelions are similar, but don’t have disc flowers- every “petal” is a ray flower, which is how it ends up turning into the beautiful ball of seeds that we blow on to make a wish.

Go outside and see what you can discover!❤️

Sacramento Book Crawl this weekend in celebration of #independentbookstoreday! 📚📖📕

Visit our many local bookshops and the amazing people who make them part of our warm, supportive community. Get real recommendations, have a laugh, and find the perfect book! It should be a gorgeous weekend. ☀️☀️☀️

If you can’t make it out, you can always support our local indies by ordering from Bookshop.org instead of you-know-who. 80%of the proceeds go to independent bookstores instead of billionaires. You can even pick which of your fave shops get the profits. How cool is that?❤️❤️❤️
