I’m reaching out with some exciting news and a request for your support. Our film, Bateau, has been awarded the South Carolina Indie Grants award from the South Carolina Film Commission! This project is inspired by our families’ legacies on James Island, Sol Legare Island and Wiggins, South Carolina—places where our ancestors worked and thrived for over six generations.
This film is our way of uplifting their stories—ones buried deep in the soil, hidden in the swamps, and carried along the waters of the Lowcountry. We’ve received some seed funding, but we need you to help us get this project done. Every amount and share helps us bring this story to life.

Some of my favorite photos ever. We’d just wrapped @maroon_man’s @bateau_movie, a difficult shoot in the marshes of South Carolina, and the wrap party was giving way to that bittersweet sadness that punctuates every good shoot. Then the moon came up and doused us in the same ancient light that illuminated our ancestors through centuries of struggle in these marshes. I see them in these photos. taken in James Island by @maroon_man

I photographed this Charlestonian on Line Street in 2019. I used to live over there and just walk the neighborhood looking for people and things to photograph. Then I saw this man and built up the courage to ask him if I could take his portrait. He obliged and I would say this is the moment I became a photographer. taken in Line Street by @maroon_man

Honored by this invitation from Erin Kienzle and the talented team at ABC News4 Lowcountry Live!

Dr. Alex Rich, the President and CEO of the Gibbes Museum of Art, was selected for this new monthly segment to update viewers on museum happenings.

He discussed the 2027 expansion/new wing, the community exhibition partnership with HEART, and the Joshua Parks photography retrospective.

This expansion will provide the Museum a whole new wing, featuring new galleries and a state-of-the-art Education Center that together will redefine the visitor and learning experience.

This new chapter guarantees that the Museum can hold fast to its history and legacy, leaning into the needs of its 21st century audiences while remaining at its core an innovative center for learning across time, media, and culture. The new Education Center and expanded galleries are more than bricks and mortar—they are a promise to Charleston’s future.

Presented by HEART, an inclusive art studio for artists with developmental disabilities, the museum’s newest community exhibition "HEART: Taking Up Space" brings together a remarkable collection of works that celebrate presence in all its forms. Each piece is a declaration of visibility, confidence, and creative power, inviting us all to consider whose stories are told, and what becomes possible when artists fully claim their place in the world. On view now through August 14.

Reflections, a powerful solo exhibition by photographer Joshua Parks, is on view through September 13. A retrospective of the artist's visual journey through the Lowcountry over the past eight years, this body of work serves as an ever-growing archive of Lowcountry African descendants. Joshua Parks is a Black cultural worker whose filmmaking, photography, and archival practice explore African-descended communities across the American South and their enduring connections to Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, and the broader Atlantic world.
