Hello everyone!
My name is Marina Prol, astrophotographer based in the Canary Islands, Spain.
Most of my photographic work takes place on the island of Gran Canaria, where I live, and La Palma, internationally recognized as a privileged place for this discipline due to the location and quality of its clear skies.
It is a great honour to collaborate with the ESA @europeanspaceagency by showing you in this post a representative part of what I am passionate about photographing, such as astroscapes, conjunctions, deep sky, the Moon and of course our own star, the Sun.

Yesterday, October 3rd, was ESA’s Open Day in Madrid. One of my photos was part of the astrophotography exhibition, among many other activities on this really interesting day.
I caught an early morning flight from Gran Canaria and had a wonderful day there with my friends. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to meet the other astrophotographers, which I’m really sorry about, but it was impossible for me to get there any earlier…
I’ll be sharing more photos from the event in my stories.

.
Maximum of the Partial Eclipse
As if it were possible not to know by now, there was a partial lunar eclipse in the early hours of this morning.
While the computer and PIPP are still battling it out with the more of thousand photos I have for a timelapse, I’m also sharing an image of the maximum eclipse here, captured with the SkyWatcher Maksutov 127mm telescope and the Sony a7IV.
This was the setup I used for the timelapse, which, with so many clouds around, I don’t think is going to turn out very well. C’est la vie!
I’m a little surprised that I managed to capture the turquoise/ozone band in a single image (not HDR), especially given the weather conditions last night.

.
Partial Lunar Eclipse
Last night/early this morning, from 3:33 a.m., when the Moon began entering the umbra, until 5:13 a.m., when the partial eclipse reached its maximum, the clouds wouldn’t let me do much :/. Despite being sleepy, I decided to wait for a gap in the clouds.
I had a camera mounted on the telescope (Maksutov 127 mm) with the idea of making a timelapse, buuuut… ☁️ Still, I’ve got my laptop working overtime processing the thousand-plus images from that setup in PIPP.
With the other camera, I managed to get these two images at 600 mm (cropped to a 5:4 vertical format) and 200 mm (cropped to 5:4).
I hope you were able to capture it better from wherever you are…

Efecto Novaya Zemlya (Nueva Zembla)
.
Novaya Zemlya Effect
The last afternoon we spent in Galicia this summer (a few days after the total solar eclipse), we went to say goodbye from a very special place, very close to where my grandfather, like so many other Galician sailors, lost his life at sea.
That afternoon, atmospheric refraction gifted us one of the most stunning mirages I have ever seen. With the Sun already below the horizon, the polar image showed the peculiar shape of what looks to me like a ship (1, 2), along with the square Sun so typical of this mirage (3).

Where were you when the sky went dark? 🌚🌞

On 12 August 2026, the Moon’s shadow crossed Europe, and members of the #yourESA community went out to see it for themselves.

First up: an animation from @marprol, shot through a solar telescope in Galicia. It shows the eclipse building, frame by frame, right up until her mount disconnected and her laptop overheated. That’s eclipse chasing for you. Things go wrong, and you keep shooting anyway.

From there, swipe through to see the rest. Some of the community travelled a long way to stand in the path of totality. Others waited with a filter and a lot of patience, watching the Sun thin down to a curve. Between them, they used telescopes, telephoto lenses, even a Polaroid, to hold onto a few minutes that don’t come round very often.

@emanuele.nifosi.photography, Cava d’Aliga, Sicily, Italy

Emanuele ran two rigs, one tuned to hydrogen-alpha light, the other a straightforward telescope and camera pointed at the low Sun. This is that second shot, the Sun sinking towards the sea over Sicily, most of its disc gone, wrapped in the deep red only a sunset eclipse can give you.

@miguel_claro, Bodegas Nabal, Burgos, Spain

Miguel was one of five photographers invited to a private viewing event in Burgos, and this is what he came home with. He blended nine exposures into one frame, shot from a hotel balcony during the 104 seconds of totality. The result: the Sun’s corona, stretched out across a dark sky.

@alexconu, Castrillo de la Reina, Burgos, Spain

Alex took a different route entirely. No digital sensor, just a @polaroid 195 camera loaded with black and white film. He captured every phase of the eclipse on a single frame, filter on for the partial stages, filter off to catch totality and the landscape around him. As far as he knows, it’s the first eclipse sequence ever shot on Polaroid.

@mehmet.erguen, Atienza, Guadalajara, Spain

Mehmet caught totality from Atienza, close enough to the Moon’s edge to pick up the red flares of the Sun’s chromosphere breaking through. Shot on a Nikon Z8 with a 18-600mm lens, tracked on a Wave 100i mount. That thin red line is real. It’s the Sun’s edge, peeking round the Moon.

SOL
