… the starting point of a new dress, designed around a satin fabric with a cool, glass like sheen.. I draped two different bodice variations—one with a deep V and other with a more covered neckline which shows more of the fabric sheen effect...
next step… I will fit both versions on a model …

...and its finished..

Inspired by a 60s gown I found in an vintage store, I draped my own version in brown georgette and hand stitched the gathers into place as I went...I tried it with a sheer mesh T-shirt underneath for the final look...

It changes the feeling of the dress ...
I think the back might be my favourite part.

….original vintage dress was a size 6, so instead of grading it up, I draped a new base directly on the mannequin. I kept the wide 60s neckline, low V back and train, but changed it to an earthy brown to make it feel quieter and more wearable....then came lots of pinning of top layer georgette until the gathers felt right…

It still carries the feeling of the original, just in a softer, more modern way. Next, I’m finishing it all off....

.. a late1960s Jinoel of Melbourne gown, caught between two eras of Australian fashion...It still carries the handwork, structure and glamour of traditional cocktail dress of the day but its wide neckline, sheer georgette and wrapped draping point towards something freer and more modern....

Before designing my own interpretation, I want to understand what Jill Kemelfield was doing with the original fabric and construction.

Would you preserve this dress exactly as it is or reinterpret its ideas for today?

(quick correction, label is Jinoel of Melbourne—mispronounced as “Janelle” in the audio. The designer was Jill Kemelfield, not Jill Campbell)

… and the final stages of the dress came together .. I've attaching the main skirt to the outer layer, adding the internal elastic waist stay, inner tulle for volume and boning through the inner corset....

sewing of the foundation underneath the dress..

I started with the corset lining, sewing the panels together and adding the boning into the seams. This was the foundation piece, so I needed the structure to feel steady before I started draping the bodice over the top.
