$boo!!!! were you scared? if you’re here and supporting us, probably not. but if you’re signing away the rights of trans folks from the capitol building in des moines or from washington dc or from your shiny fancy estate home, you must be—cowards that you are to punch down on your most vulnerable constituents. i lived in iowa city for five years. came out as trans ~year 2. screamed my throat raw in opposition to the iowa state legislature’s newly proposed anti-trans bill every subsequent spring like clockwork. i wrote “boo!” over the course of the last two years, between proposed bathroom and book bans and revocation of trans healthcare and erasure from iowa’s civil rights act, feeling like i was screaming for my life while the devils with the power to stop it refused to hear me, wishing selfishly that transphobia could be a true fear if it meant that these lawmakers would feel a fraction of the terror that trans people feel just existing every day. it’s never been a scarier time to be publicly transgender. yet we’ve existed long before even the most ancient, bigoted lawmakers were born and will exist for long after they leave this earth. in this terrible time between, we do what we can to make sure that stays true. through love and spite and rage and grief and resistance. We Are Always Here. “boo!” is the opening track for Always Here: A Compilation of Sounds From Iowa — art by, about, and for real trans iowans. i’m honored to be just one of the 19 talented artists featured on the album. you can buy the whole record on bandcamp at the link in our bio and know that every cent gets donated to the @iowatransmutualaidfund. xoxo, mars ❤️‍🔥 by @marshojilla$
