archiving small wins & challenges i’ve put my body thru that weren’t possible a year ago ::

the artworks i’m making in my practice & current research attempt to embrace the themes & practices i encountered during my death-to-rebirth healing journey, + offer them as a lens (one of many dimensions) into collective healing.

mine is from a (temporarily) chronically ill & disabled,
+ immersion therapy and somatic therapy perspective.

when i predominantly identified as ill, i quickly became aware of all the “normal things” i could no longer do. for months, i couldn’t stand to cook or go for a walk around the block. for over a year i couldn’t drive, shop for my own groceries, meet friends to do anything that wasn’t sedentary, or meet clients on site to do a site visit.

in a post-capitalistic society, that sharply challenges your self-worth.

beyond day-to-day battles with “ability”, the idea of traveling across the globe seemed a way of living i wasn’t sure if/when i would ever embody again.

that brought profound grief.

once healthy again & with that dissonance in mind, i began to train. however, if in that state long enough, you begin to believe you no longer can do those things. so the training isn’t just physical, but somatic. to believe in your body that you are able.

i made a list of all the acts & places that felt unsafe or inaccessible to me (because they were) during my treatment (& the symptoms Lyme presented prior to diagnosis).

slowly, i confronted each at the source & in practice. profound wins / highlights:

~ milos, 10/2024 :: traveling alone on an island away from all my safety nets or anyone i knew where i needed to be completely self-reliant

~ paris, 1/2025 :: back to back museums daily with lots of sensory overload + the most monthly steps to date

~ florence, 4/2025 :: apartment on the 6th floor w/o an elevator that i carried suitcases + water/groceries up 100+ steps to

i’m brainstorming on how love & desire play a role as a modality for alchemy but making that connection feels insensitive in a time of such inflammation on our planet, especially given the past week. by @martastaudinger

i watched a woman dive into the sea
& swim out further than my vision would provide
to later learn that somewhere along the way she had gotten disconnected, lost her ability to swim, & began to fear the sea.

but all i saw was her vigor
as if it were innate to her daily being.

i witnessed another woman plant a seed
& nurture it with such care
that it in just a few months a group of people nourished — completely filled up for months to come — from its first precious fruits.

she taught me alignment & trust fosters fertile ground.

& i became the woman who drove island to island
offering rides to friends & hitchhikers alike
and jumping off of mountains
after years of over stimulation + fear taking the wheel.

i learned to embrace my wild and fly with the wind.

♾️
i don’t know much
but i do know new beginnings are possible

& that they integrate effortlessly
when you and the universe are ready.

🏺🌊 alchemy is at our fingertips.
we are changed forever.

My paper from last semester, presented in Italy this summer, on the intersection of the male gaze and medical gaze, both of which continue because of and propel surveillance culture — seems time appropriate to share given the constantly increasing news of violence against female-identifying and ill bodies.

This paper was heavily influenced by @traceyeminstudio’s exhibition ‘Sex and Solitude’ in Florence last year, which I also wrote extensively on (without any accompanying theory just pure feminine rage) in a substack post titled “Sacred grief, rage, desire”. I’d argue Tracey’s work is the best place to feel all the feels re: women who care deeply for desire yet simultaneously feel enraged/unsafe/lonely due to the weight of the world we live in, but I hope my words about her exhibition may also provide some… fuel.

This work also guided me to my current research, which I will share more about soon: many ideas are churning and thus, the PhD is PhDing… by @martastaudinger

The art that is most authentic to you comes when you stop trying to control your artistic practice. Here’s a little visualization to help you pass the baton, giving your practice its own autonomy. Compare it to a current that produces waves: gives and takes, pulls and pushes. Some days are soft, others are too strong. My first theoretical paper as a PhD student is now online via substack. This paper explores Marxian theories of laborer alienation, the role of the artist, and spiritual consciousness, with the artworks of Catalan multidisciplinary artist Antoni Tàpies as a key visual and conceptual example. we live in a world full of distractions and witnessing the accomplishments of others, which can make moments of stillness feel unproductive.

but your timing belongs to you and is sacred to you. trust how your workflow and business moves in cycles.

stillness is just as informative as movement.

know that your time will come.

stay the course ~
