Supercat for GQ - link in bio, Brooklyn 2021 My bredrin and longtime collaborator, Mr Eddie ‘Stats’ Houghton @edwin.houghton, called me back in October, with a little urgency in his voice. He wanted to know if I could possibly come shoot some Supercat images at The Barclay Center a couple of days later… Sounded good to me! Don Dadda, one of the greatest Dancehall Albums ever recorded, is turning thirty (30!) this year - celebrations are in order! Judging from its relevance, it is safe to say that Dancehall could still take lots of cues from this work. A precious few dancehall records have this sort of shelf life. Shooting Cat is always interesting. Like a combination of chess and basketball - poetry in motion. Story is live on GQ.com today. #dancehall #reggae #portrait #photography #dondadda #30thanniversary by @marteikorley1

Sly Dunbar, One Pop Studio Kingston, Jamaica 2012 The King has left the building: Sly Dunbar is the most prolific musician on record, period. And Sly & Robbie have produced more tracks than anyone else on the planet. It is impossible to overstate the unique impact of Sly Dunbar’s outsized talent which has given birth to genre after genre since he played drums on “Double Barrel”. He is in a league of his own. How do you explain that the most popular drummer in Reggae plays completely differently from all others, to the point where the musicians playing with him had to learn a different swing? That his velocity and rhythm was surgical? His Roddim Twin, Robbie Shakespeare, said he felt drum machines were made to emulate Sly’s style because nothing else could. That he sounded like many master drummers playing at the same time. I would tend to agree. Sly Dunbar has been the metronome to my life since I was a little boy. His great kindness and self-effacing demeanor were an unusual pairing for someone with a singular focus like his. Always willing to share some of the mystery, while offering guidance and friendship. A great loss to music culture and anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. However, his work will live on forever. We give thanks for your service!🙏🏽🙏🏽 Rest easy, bredrin - I pray that you and Robbie will rev up the Taxi again on the other side… #slydunbar #kingofdrums #greatest #drummer #innovator #genius #musician #slydunbar #givethanks# by @marteikorley1
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the opening of 'Forward Together', my exhibition of portraiture of the young members of Brooklyn United Drumline - Brooklyn United Music and Arts. Give Thanks! As a passion project the entire production was assisted along the way by several of my passionate friends and I am so thankful for each and every one of them. To mention a few: @maitlandphoto and @edwin.houghton for helping making it all materialize, @kamaupatton and @madanthonynyc really for bringing the energy for the Q/A, while @tawanaschlegeldesign set the stage. A special thanks to @citizensnyc for sponsoring the show, the Herbert Von King Cultural Arts Center staff, Moesha and Alex in particular. Great talk, great energy! Thank you @ralstonrsmith for capturing some of that energy - the photos are great! Can't wait to see what @jamelshabazz captured, moving the culture forward! What a privilege to have friends like these. Show is on display Mon to Sat 10:00 to 7:00 until 1/1 at Herbert Von King Cultural Arts Center 670 Lafayette Ave BKLN, NY #portraiture #portraitphotography #exhibition #lifestyle #art #NYC #Brooklyn #Children #youth #talent #music by @marteikorley1
Tifa has been a factor in dancehall since emerging under the umbrella of Ward 21 as part of the trio called TNT aka Badda Badda Gals, bringing an unapologetic sense of self to the genre from day one. An artist who critics like to count out, but who always seems to bounce right back, she’s in the conversation once more with “Can’t Cancel Me,” an uplifting dancehall hymnal in the vein of songs like Mr. Vegas’ “I Am Blessed” and Elephant Man’s “Too Bad Mind” which recently topped the iTunes reggae chart after inspiring a wave of viral TikToks. LargeUp caught up with Tifa on a sunny autumn afternoon in Coney Island, Brooklyn, for a photo shoot and a breezy conversation about her introduction to dancehall and the inspirations behind her latest hit. Head to LargeUp.com for an intriguing Q&A with Tifa… 📸 @marteikorley1 by @marteikorley1
