MarthaMarthaMarthaCoin

short version: I designed my own economy centered around keeping me happy and used ceramic pigs as currency. I dressed up as a banker, made this cardboard banking furniture, recorded on the transactions on ceramic receipts, and made a very sophisticated excel spreadsheet which calculated how happy I was and used that to determine the value of the pigs on a given day.

long version: The world’s first physical cryptocurrency. Stepping into the role of an autocratic banker, I’ve created a set design telling the story of the economy I designed to try and keep me happy. The currency in my economy are ceramic pigs; the happier I am the more your pig is worth. So keep me chipper and you’ll be bringing home the bacon.

In the age of cryptocurrencies, conservations around money have never been more important. However they are not easily understandable to those who are not digitally or financially literate. And no one wants to talk to a crypto bro about crypto. By making the whole conversation tangible and more tongue and cheek, viewers are more inclined to ask bigger questions such as what do we give value to? Why are economic systems so convoluted? And is the future of finance local or even personal?

This project will be displayed at Dutch Design Week 2023 as part of the Design Academy Graduation Show @ the Heuvel centre. Come say hi for more pig related economy puns.

I’ve been doing lots of glaze experiments recently, and I don’t believe in test tiles so here’s a few of the test cups that have come out of the kiln. Been trying different tools and motion to apply glaze.

A very swish video of me trimming a slightly wobbly pot at @earthworks_ceramic_studios shot by @charlesbrittain

I have really been trying to improve my throwing over the past few months, and throwing bigger things. Also enjoy the current iteration of my makers mark, a full body upgrade from the headless stamp used for the pig production era.
