Black History Month Spotlight: Martin D. Redmond

Martin isn’t just a wine writer — he’s a storyteller and advocate whose work connects culture, education, and community.

Reflecting on the legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson, Martin points to a quote that still resonates:
“Our diversity is truly America’s strength and the hateful reaction to it is truly America’s weakness.”

After years in tech where diversity and inclusion were priorities, the wine space felt different. From tasting rooms to tasting notes, the industry often reflects a narrow Eurocentric lens and doesn’t always mirror the communities who love and drink wine.

Through his writing and his blog, Enofylz Wine Blog, Martin brings a thoughtful perspective shaped by lived experience and curiosity. His belief is simple: wine is for everyone, and the conversation around it should reflect that.

That’s also why he serves on the Board of the Glancy Wine Education Foundation — helping expand access to wine education and supporting a more inclusive future for the industry. by @martindredmond

We have rebranded our podcast to align with the overall Cooking Chat focus on food & wine pairings, while continuing to feature local food content that we covered on Cook Local Eat Local.

Martin Redmond was a perfect first guest for the updated Cooking Chat Food & Wine podcast, given our shared interest in food and wine pairings. I enjoyed chatting with Martin about tasty pairing ideas and learning more about his wine journey, including how he started his Enofylz Wine Blog.

Give it a listen for some wine pairing inspiration and to hear more about Martin's wine knowledge and passion! Listen wherever you get your podcasts, including:

One of my California Wine Month picks comes with Catalan roots—and a distinctly Lodi sense of place.

Markus and Liz Bokisch helped pioneer Spanish grape varieties in Lodi, and their 2023 Xarel·lo reflects the evolution of that pioneering spirit.

Known as a backbone of the classic Cava blend, Xarel·lo shines here as a still wine.

Think ripe peach. Crisp green apple. Fragrant chamomile. A touch of almond. Then a bright, saline finish that keeps you reaching for another sip. All at just 11.5% ABV.

This is what I love about the diversity of California wine: unexpected discoveries, global inspiration, and bottles that tell a story of place.

One action-packed week, countless memorable moments. 🇮🇹✨

We tasted our way through the sun-drenched hills of Cortona and Montepulciano—from family-owned Baldetti, where Syrah takes center stage, to my surprise favorite: a traditional-method sparkling wine made from a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Grechetto. At La Braccesca, we lingered over a memorable tasting and lunch, savoring an alluring Vino Nobile di Montepulciano that stole the show. Later, we explored the spectacular architecture and wines of Antinori, where a bottle of Tignanello made its way home with us.

Between glasses, we wandered through the golden streets of Arezzo and Siena, admired the sacred beauty of Assisi, explored flower-filled Spello and took in the lakeside charm of Castiglione del Lago. We shared an extraordinary dinner at Michelin-starred Il Falconiere, learned to make pillowy gnocchi and silky tiramisu at our villa, and slowed down just enough to enjoy long afternoons by the pool, the soft rhythm of rain and the timeless beauty of Cortona.

Wine, history, food, friendship and la dolce vita—Tuscany gave us all of it, in the most delicious and memorable way. ❤️ #TuscanyTravel #Cortona #ItalianWine #WineTravel #VinoNobileDiMontepulciano taken in Tuscany, Italy by @martindredmond

After a couple of action-packed days in Palermo, Taormina—an instant favorite —invited us to slow down and savor the tranquility of this beautiful hill town above the Ionian Sea.

Amid ancient ruins, lovely public gardens, great restaurants and ever-present views of Mount Etna, we found another expression of the volcano at Monsù. 🌋

“Etna and See”: a cuttlefish arancino shaped like the mountain, with marinara “lava,” grated ricotta “snow” and a vivid blue bowl representing the Ionian Sea.

Paired with my first Nerello Mascalese rosato, it was a delicious taste of Etna—from plate to glass. 🍷

Palermo, our first stop in Sicily: under 48 hours, three UNESCO treasures and one seriously delicious deep dive. 🇮🇹

Palermo Cathedral ✅
A climb to Monreale’s dazzling Duomo ✅
Cefalù Cathedral—and a fabulous meal at Locanda del Marinaio ✅ paired with an outstanding @murgowinery Etna Bianco that was most refreshing, delicious and somehow managed to be both mineral and saline!

These three landmarks reflect Sicily’s remarkable blend of Western, Islamic and Byzantine cultures.

Then we tasted our way through Palermo with Sicilian classics caponata + cannoli + arinchina, and Palermo’s classic street food pani câ meusa, the city’s famous spleen/lung sandwich.

Short stay. Big history. Bigger flavors. Zero regrets.

Well, this called for bubbles! 🥂

After months of studying, hundreds of cloze cards, and more wine geography than I ever imagined, I’m thrilled to share that I passed the Society of Wine Educators’ Certified Specialist of Wine exam—with a score of 85%!

The process challenged me, expanded my knowledge, and deepened my appreciation for the extraordinary world of wine.

A half bottle of Chandon felt like just the right way to kick off the celebration. 🍾

Now, back to exploring wine—one glass, one region, and one story at a time.

He was told European grapes couldn’t thrive in the Finger Lakes.

Dr. Konstantin Frank proved them wrong. 🍇

Four generations later, that pioneering spirit lives on in these four wines—from traditional-method bubbles to Grüner Veltliner.

Neighbor Night at Americana House featuring Markus Wine Co.

Outstanding food, a beautifully aromatic 2025 Nativo Kerner( a Riesling x Schiava originating in Germany)with the compressed strawberry salad, and Old Vine Shiraz with our entrées(a bottle of each its way home with us).

One of the things I love most about Lodi? Sharing the experience with the owner and winemaker himself. That’s what makes this wine community so special.

Proof that Lambrusco can be sophisticated. Dark berries, fine bubbles, savory depth, and serious food-pairing energy. The Brutrosso from Cantina della Volta is redefining what Lambrusco can be.

it drinks like your favorite chillable, crushable, red wine, but the bubbles make it better!
