Some of my favorite memories from Iraq aren’t the places… they’re the people.

These are just a few of the incredible people I had the privilege of meeting along the way. Their kindness, generosity, and hospitality completely changed my perspective and made this journey unforgettable.

Iraq is a country full of history, breathtaking landscapes, and even more beautiful people. It’s a place I’ll never forget, and I’m incredibly grateful for every conversation, smile, and shared moment.

Day 15 — Turkey ➜ Slovenia ➜ Austria 🇹🇷🇧🇬🇷🇸🇸🇮🇦🇹

We were still driving through Turkey when, after a morning of slowly losing tire pressure, the inevitable happened: BANG. Blowout.

For the previous half day, we had been stopping at gas stations every couple of hours to pump up the tire. This time, it suddenly gave up completely. We pulled onto the hard shoulder, swapped it for our tiny spare wheel, and continued the journey.

We crossed into Bulgaria, where the car was inspected but thankfully nothing was found. I went to sleep while the others continued driving through Bulgaria and halfway through Serbia.

Later, we crossed into Slovenia—and that’s when things got really bad.

The BMW suddenly started smoking like crazy and shaking violently. It looked like something was seriously wrong with the engine, possibly a blown head gasket or an injector problem. I honestly thought the car was going to catch fire. But we kept driving.

Then, near Graz in Austria, the tiny spare tire finally gave up too.

Luckily, we were just before an exit. I managed to get off the highway and called the ANWB. A recovery truck arrived and towed us to a local tire shop.

At this point, with another 12 hours of driving still ahead and an engine that clearly wasn’t happy, we had to make a decision.

We took the train to Vienna and flew back to the Netherlands.

But the car still had to come home…

I got a replacement wheel ready, and the next chapter of this adventure is coming soon.
