My first summer read of 2026 is Twenty-four Seconds From Now... by Jason Reynolds. This the YA novel tells the story of a 17-year-old boy, Neon, who is on the verge of having his first sexual encounter with the love of his life, his high school sweetheart Aria. I really liked the fact that this love story is coming from the perspective of the male MC in a sweet and genuine way. If your liked Netflix's "Forever" chances are you will enjoy this book. by @martiparham

Had a great time at the American Writers Festival. This was a great event w/ inspiring talks from a variety of authors including @nikesha_elise, Zakiya Dalilah Harris, and Angela Nissel. I even got to share a moment with one of my favorite authors @tananarivedue. 😁 by @martiparham

If you would have told me that I was going to fall in like with a movie about a talking octopus and its friendship with an old lady, I would have called you a liar. But I have to admit the movie, now streaming on Netflix, is a very sweet story. I won't say too much about it because I don't want to give anything away, but if you like family drama and a touch of magical realism, you don't want to pass this one up. You might actually fall in like with this story too. If you saw it or read the book, let me know what you think about it. #RemarkablyBrightCreatures by @martiparham

The book that I highly recommend the most these days is THE REFROMATORY by @tananarivedue. This is a page-turner to the very end. It's a uniquely told ghost story set in the 1950's Jim Crow South told from the perspective of a 12-year-old boy and his teenage sister. Even though the main characters are young, this novel does not read as a young adult story. The topics tackled in this book are very grown up and touch on American's history. The book definitely pulls at the emotions so keep the tissue close. If you've read it, let met me know what you think. by @martiparham

I've been reading lots of short stories lately, and recently took on a personal challenge to write one. But it's been a bit of a struggle. Not too long ago this story that I wrote about 10 years back miraculously resurfaced. At first I wasn't ready to read it. Life was lifin' in the worst way. That's when I put it away and unfortunately misplaced it. When it found its way to me again the other day I took advantage of the time and took in words. The cool thing is that I liked it. This was the perfect reminder that if I could do it once, I can do it again. by @martiparham

The Wiz is one of my favorite stories. I would have loved to have seen Stephanie Mills originate the role of Dorothy, but time did not permit that. Instead I got a chance to see Phoenix Assata LaFreniere take on the part, and she was great!WARNING this new version is slightly different from the movie featuring Diana Ross, but it's still a great experience. WHEN the musical comes to your city I suggest you go see it. 💚 by @martiparham

I have been waiting to read @savannahversebooks's debut novel Witch Queen Rising since before she got an agent or a book deal. I'm so excited that this Southern Gothic dark fantasy is coming out soon. Pre-order now or cop yours when it comes out on April 21. by @martiparham

On to the second read of the new year, which is HER NAME IS KNIGHT by Yasmin Angoe. This one is a little different from what I normally read. It's espionage with a Black female MC who has hopes of ending the bloodshed for good. But can she really do that when she has an opportunity to get revenge on the one who sold her into captivity? The book is 82 chapters with 413 pages. 🤪 I just started this, but so far it's a page-turner. The best part is that the chapters are short, which helps push me through faster. A while back I shared that I was trying my hand at creating art with clay (art is a great stress reliever if you didn't know). Well, here is my second attempt. It's a tea light candle holder! 😊 I made my fair share of mistakes, but overall I don't think it turned out too bad. I was going for an Annie Lee type of look, but with lips. 😘Now that I've created my first figurine, I hope to get better from here. Wish me luck & stay tuned. by @martiparham
