Today marks the birthday of Luis Barragán, the Mexican master who turned light, color, & silence into architecture.

These moments are from my visit to @casa_gilardi during Mexico City Art Week this past February. Walking through Barragán’s spaces feels less like touring a house and more like moving through a sequence of emotions.

What made the visit special was our guide, Martín. As he told the story of the house with incredible depth, I asked if he was an architect. He said yes. Later he mentioned the house had been designed for his father which made sense.

Martín @martluket also shared how Barragán loved gardens and often designed his houses around existing trees rather than removing them. You can feel that philosophy throughout @casa_gilardi

When he learned I’m originally from Egypt and now live in Houston, he told us how the Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy influenced many architects in Mexico. He also mentioned that Barragán was once commissioned by the Menil family to design a guest house near the Menil Collection in Houston, a project that was designed but never built.

A lucky visit and a beautiful reminder that architecture connects stories across cities and continents. #cdmx #luisbarragán #architecture taken in Casa Gilardi by @martluket

Cuando el destino “es”. Solo queda fluir…

No soy nada cercano a “perfecto”… pero estar con quien te abraza desde lo más bello con toda tu obscuridad puede hacerte llegar un poco de luz… la mía es una luz azul…
