Managed to squeeze in some time with Bibulous’ Devil Drive Polaris. Great juicy single stage jam shmup with personality and layers that I can’t wait to get back to at some point. Check this one out on itch.io and if you haven’t already also try out their other game Pergation Swordstorm- also super fun and stylish.

STAND STILL you little $£|+s !!!

Frenetic motion is the key property of #shmandala - enemies dance and jive in a way that gives things a unique trippy feel- like some sort of technicolor fever dream that you experience after you’ve been stung by an neon striped African jungle wasp.
.
While it shows its pedigree through its #chorensha68k power up triangles, the juddery expression also brings to mind #rym9000, and those cavorting foes have the feel of the little €?$+*£} green squares from #geometrywars. As part Bullet and Next Fest it’s nice to have something that advertises ‘No Roguelike mechanics’ as a feature. Def check this one out and wishlist your support.

As far as I'm concerned there is only one thing worth getting from steam bullet fest - and that's the Infinity Lancer Demo. Oh boy - the realest of #shmup. So much love <3.

My wings are rather clipped at the moment (because I have to spend evenings holding a baby rather than a flight stick 😅), but I was delighted to get my copy of #forgottenworlds issue 7. If you like zine style stuff like mine and early/mid nineties Japan aesthetic, act fast and grab your copy before they run out. Also a bunch more awesome zine suggestions in the annual, so I’ve got some more I need to check out :3.

Gigadyne Voltraid (great name) is just the sort of explodo messy, bullet grid heavy, power up cascading, sticky jam shmup we really need right now.
Another great one-stage experience to add to the Stg Builder pantheon. Bilulous is really going from strength to strength building on Purgation Swordstorm, which is another one you should get into if you haven’t tried it. Pick up Gigadyne Voltraid on itch and let them know how much you like it in the comments.

Kanzaki Shintarou tied up 2025 by releasing 2 new games! Super Space Strikers is super fun and tough as bullets, and feels most like their first game Open Arms Maximum which is a fave. Still figuring out the chain mechanics and looking forward to spending some more time with it.

Current aesthetic mode/preoccupation - At the intersection between power lines, crows, the urban legend susurrus of the early internet, wireless signals, digital phantoms, existential compaction, daraku rooms, and mass media otaku baroque.
.
Not much time for shmup play at the moment, but finding other media that resonate with the aesthetic realities of Milestone’s games. In particular an obsession with #ninajirachi and her mix of digital nostalgia and eerie wired spectre imagery.

My #illmaticenvelope addiction has sent me down a #takashimurakami and #superflat wormhole. There is so much tangled up in here in relation to Japan, wider game history and shmup culture that I don’t think I’d ever be able to unpick it in the space of a IG caption, so it’ll just have to wait until I can give it a proper break down in my next zine. My brain will just be vibrating in technocolour until then.

Emerald Blue is captivating in the way that it forces you to play very differently through the simple use of wide enemy bullet patterns. This very aggressive style along with guided missile bullets leaves you slewing left and right as you play extreme macro dodge all across the screen. I really appreciate this decidedly different feel enabled through just core value tweaking rather than needing the injection of another mechanical gimmick. Flavors of other doujins like #bluewishresurrection , but because of this distinct anarchic character it becomes something all of its own.
