SECRET MISSION: “NOVEMBER 1st Autumn Fire” what more is to be said ! #backyardbonfire #autumnbonfire #enjoythejourney #livewithintention by @martywilliard
SECRET MISSION: “A BRIDGE TOO FAR” (Deventer, Netherlands). Deventer is the movie location of the epic Battle of Arnhem / OPERATION MARKET GARDEN - the 1977 Sir Richard Attenborough’s film - “ A BRIDGE TOO FAR”. (This movie is one of my Top 10 favorites.). WE WERE HERE! Got to walk the bridge - from the movie! Bauke took Sabrina and I on this l epic Secret Mission to see the bridge and the incredibly beautiful and historic village of Deventer. The movie title is based on a quote from Lieutenant- General Frederick Browning to Field Marshall Montgomery “I always thought we tried to go … a bridge too far.” The attempt was to secure the Arnhem bridge to punch into Germany and defeat Hitler. While Operation Market Garden was not successful … we all know how the war ended. If you haven’t seen the movie … check it out. After walking the bridge - Bauke introduced us to the Dutch delicacy of fresh herring. That is another Secret Mission video adventure! Enjoy this short clip …. #abridgetoofar #battleofarnhem #deventernetherlands🇳🇱 #enjoythejourney #secretmission by @martywilliard
SECRET MISSION: “WADLOPEN PIETERBUREN” the Wadden Sea / Northern Netherlands 🇳🇱. Just when I thought I had done it all, Bauke (our 2019 Camino friend we visited after my work celebration) says: “I’m taking you on a WADLOPEN adventure!” “ A WHAT?!” “ A MUDFLAT HIKING ADVENTURE !” He responds ! “You will love it. Don’t worry about a thing ! Don’t ask any questions - trust me!” His hearty laugh did (and always does) make me laugh. “OK!” Enjoy this (1) minute clip from our 2.5 hour adventure with Bauke and his bud, Joop, as we trek the mudflats of the Wadden Sea! A WADLOPEN is a Dutch guided hike with a licensed guide. You cannot go out alone. This video captures just a few of the amazing moments we had. The group you see here - we entered as strangers but came out as friends! THAT IS THE POWER OF SECRET MISSIONS. While Sabrina could not join this hike - she enjoyed the quiet, small and beautiful village of Pieterburen. But - when we returned - we ALL had dinner together. Sabrina became fast friends with our WADLOPEN buds. The stories - the laughter - the food - the friendship … all because we were living our best KID life playing in the mud! SECRET MISSIONS MATTER! Don’t Wait ! Time can never be replaced. SECRET MISSION OFTEN. CREATE MEMORIES. Make “SOMEDAY” today. ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY! Remember - LIFE IS GOOD! (THANK YOU, Bauke !!!! This truly was an amazing DUTCH experience!) Peace , friends! #enjoythejourney #waddenseaworldheritage #wadlopenpieterburen #secretmissions by @martywilliard

SECRET MISSION: “Madonna and Child” by Michelangelo. How do I capture the essence of this experience in a few words? Not sure I can or will. Our amazing Belgium Camino friends , Ann and Jan (who opened their home , children and grandchildren to us ) took us on many Secret Missions which included a trip to Bruges, Belgium … Specifically to The Church of Our Lady home to this Michelangelo’s master piece sculpted between 1501 - 1504 in Italy. NOTE - it is the only Michelangelo sculpture to ever leave Italy. The Madonna and Child was stolen by Napoleon’s forces during the French Revolution in 1794 but returned in 1845. Yet again - The Madonna and Child was stolen in 1944 by Hitler and his Nazi regimen for a planned private collection of stolen art from around Europe. In 1945, The Allied Troops formed the Monuments Men who rescued her (along with 10’s of thousands other priceless works) from a salt mine (and other mines) returning her to the Church of Our Lady. The Madonna and Child was the cornerstone rescue of their mission ! (If you haven’t watched / seen the movie THE MONUMENTS MEN from 2014 - it is a must watch). That is why standing in front of this most beautiful piece of art - culture - history and Faith … moved us so deeply. WE WERE THERE. Another reason, my Uncle Steve passed away the day before we arrived in Bruges. We lit (2) candles for him during this visit and said many prayers for his peaceful transition. How special to do this here as he had a strong devotion to Mother Mary and of course, Our Lord. One last thought - in 1987 while backpacking Europe, I was blessed to see these amazing masterpieces by Michelangelo, too: THE PIETA (In St Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City - Rome). And with my neck bent back seemingly for an eternity looking up - THE SISTINE CHAPEL ceiling in the Apostolic Palace - Vatican City - Rome. Just amazing!! And finally THE DAVID in Florence. Powerful ! Then this trip with Sabrina … seeing The Madonna and Child. REMEMBER: SECRET MISSIONS MATTER!! #madonnaandchild #churchofourladybruges #bruges #enjoythejourney by @martywilliard
