Uncle Bub. Didn't see this one coming so soon. I'm kicking myself for not making the trip. I thought you'd outlive them all. You hilarious, crab-killing fool! The ache of your absence is so incredibly deep. At times I feel I can't breathe. My hope is that through all of the loss in our family, you're finally free ... now wrapped up in our mothers' arms. Sound On! Don't hate me for admiring the American Revolution, even though my ancestors were illegal immigrants in the eyes of natives. Americans called us spics. My great-grandfather was an indentured servant. None of us were around these parts in 1776, and we weren't even rich enough to own slaves. (later on, when America repented, my grandmothers had no right to vote for Lincoln's proclamation). Bad, bad business deals with African nations caused our economy to flourish on the backs of slaves. My ancestors were bred to think of these skilled laborers as less than human. In my eyes, America is blessed AND America has sin ... Why do I feel the need to justify myself as an American who has deep respect for those who gave their life so we could be free from English authoritarianism? Because there are so many of my friends writing others off if they speak positively at all about our nation. Others demonize people who shine a light on the sin of our nation as well. We all carry deeply nuanced stories inside of our hearts based on our personal histories, and often times, we let the influencers we listen to most shape our narratives, too. Revolutions can be viewed in the same manner. Who is your narrator?
