Back to playing with pen and watercolour, with a new subject and two possible compositions 🤔

These garage doors in Bondi caught my eye yesterday. I love the horizontals and verticals, and there’s a bit of a Jeffrey Smart feel about them.

“Folded beach towel paintings : A friend pointed out that the first painting looks like child’s pose, and now I can’t stop seeing yoga poses in all of my folded towels. 🤦‍♀️” Mary Stack

These two are framed oil on canvas 23x28cm $490 each.

This Sunday, 1 November, is the final day of Close to Home at @sydneyroadgallery, and @katie.firth.art and I will be there from 10am–2pm.

I was pleased to be invited to do this show with Katie, whom I’ve known since our days at National Art School. Katie’s paintings are really beautiful, and I’ve loved working with her.

We developed the theme together, drawing on our shared interest in observing the things close to home. Katie looks outwards to the streetscapes around Manly, while my work looks inwards to domestic spaces and objects.

I love these photos from the Q&A at the opening. They capture how much fun we had doing the show together!

If you’re free on Sunday, come by and say hello.

A big thank you to the directors of @sydneyroadgallery for this opportunity and for making us feel so welcome. It’s been a pleasure to be part of such a supportive gallery community. by @mary_stack

Four days left to see Close to Home at @sydneyroadgallery.

In painting this series I was interested in the act of folding, the care involved in arranging a piece of fabric, and the way a folded towel can suggest the presence of the person who folded it.

These photos show some of the process behind this painting, from the watercolour sketch to the tonal underpainting and the finished work.

Close to Home is open until Sunday 1 November. Gallery details and the exhibition catalogue are available from the link in my bio.

One week left to see Close to Home @sydneyroadgallery.

This painting was inspired by Jeffrey Smart’s The Bather, Bondi (1962). Whereas Smart painted the bather, my focus on the towel suggests the bather’s presence or absence.

Open until Sunday 1 November … gallery details and exhibition catalogue via the link in my bio.

The scale of this one makes it a bit tricky to capture on Instagram. 🥴

I am very pleased that my painting Still in Service has been selected as a finalist in the Pymble Values Art Prize, with this year’s theme of courage.

The painting is of my friend Amanda’s well loved paint rag.

Thank you to @pymblevaluesartprize and congratulations to all the other finalists.

A somewhat reluctant muse, close to home.

One of my art heroes is the American artist Wayne Thiebaud, who often borrowed compositions from other artists as a starting point for his own work. Inspired by his painting Towelling Off, I made this painting for Close to Home, my exhibition with Katie Firth showing at @sydneyroadgallery .

I always start with a watercolour study before moving on to oil, so here’s a look at the process, from the initial study to the finished painting.

The gallery is open Thursday - Sunday until 1 November. You can also view online (link in bio).
