Long before modern Nigeria existed, a warrior queen was already expanding kingdoms and leading armies.

Queen Amina of Zazzau ruled the ancient Hausa city-state of Zazzau (present-day Zaria) and became one of the most powerful female military leaders in West African history.

She built fortified walls, expanded trade routes, and led her people with unmatched courage.

Her legacy reminds us that leadership, strength, and vision have no gender.

Save and share to keep African history alive.

POV: It’s the 1940s and thousands of Nigerian women are protesting unfair taxes.

At the center of it all?
Funmilayo Ransome Kuti.

She didn’t just fight colonial rule.
She built one of the most powerful women’s movements in Nigerian history.

And somehow… we don’t talk about her enough.

They told her to stay silent.
She chose to organize.

They told her politics wasn’t for women.
She built movements anyway.

Hajia Gambo Sawaba didn’t wait for permission — she demanded representation.

Would you have had her courage in that era?

Save this. Share this. Nigerian history is powerful. 🇳🇬

Before Nigerian women occupied political seats,
Margaret Ekpo was already preparing them for it.

In the 1940s and 50s, when politics was considered a male space, she mobilized women.
She educated them about civic rights.
She ran for office and won.

Today, when women vote, organize, or lead in Nigeria,
they are walking through doors she helped open.

But here’s the question:

Why do we remember political parties and founding fathers more than the women who expanded participation?

Margaret Ekpo wasn’t background support.

She was architecture.

They were never silent.

In 1929, thousands of Nigerian women did something extraordinary.

They organized one of the most powerful anti-colonial protests in West African history.

No social media.
No political titles.
No formal power.

Just strategy. Solidarity. And courage.

History sometimes calls it a “riot.”

But it was organized resistance.

The Aba Women didn’t just protest taxation.
They challenged empire.

And nearly 100 years later, their courage still echoes.

They were never silent.

We celebrate kingdoms.
We celebrate monuments.
We celebrate revolutions.

But we rarely say the names of the women behind them.

While researching women in history, I kept finding stories that changed how I see power.

Women who led armies.
Women who challenged empires.
Women who shaped Nigeria long before they were given credit.

So I’m documenting them.

This is a 6-part series on powerful women in history who still shape us today.

They were never silent.

Every time I post, there’s that moment after.
The “why did I say that out loud?” feeling.

The voice that whispers:
this is embarrassing
you’re trying too hard
no one cares

But then come the messages.
“This felt like a hug.”
“I needed this today.”

And I realize, maybe it wasn’t cringe.
Maybe it was just honest.

Does this happen to you too, or am I oversharing again? 🤍 by @maryam_ozavize
