As women, we’ve been taught a lot of things about money. Be careful with it. Don’t talk about it. Let someone else handle it. It’s not polite to discuss it.

However, our reality is undeniable: as women we face unique financial challenges that require our focused attention. We typically live longer than men, earn less over our lifetimes, and often take career breaks for caregiving responsibilities.

Understanding your financial landscape isn’t just about accumulating wealth. It’s about creating security, maintaining independence, and building the freedom to make choices on your own terms as you age. It’s about ensuring you never need to stay in situations (job, relationship, city) that don’t serve you because of financial dependence. As financial planners, we spend many of our days walking clients through financial questions and providing advice and scenarios that would enhance the ability to meet their goals.

But what about our own financial goals and priorities? How do we handle our own finances and investments? What are our personal philosophies?

I love that Brian Portnoy continues to explore this topic in Volume 2 of How I Invest My Money. The book is out in just a few days (and available now for pre-order).

Having the opportunity to compile and contribute our family’s story was a fun project. Distilling it down to the quote in the image below was an “ah-ha” moment for me.

The even better part is getting to read the stories 24 other industry professionals and colleagues and getting to learn from their life experiences as well.

Puglia, ti amiamo. 🇮🇹❤️

It will take me some time to process what this trip meant to me. So much of my culture and heritage brought to life right in front of me.

I’ve been to Italy multiple times, but had never visited the South, where our family has so many connections.

The food, the people, the beauty, the slower pace, did I mention the food?, and the ability, as someone who carries so many plates, to put them all down for a while.

It was perfect. No notes.

As a financial advisor, I spend most of my day helping people answer one question underneath all the others: do you have enough?

The real question though isn’t whether you have enough. It’s “if you knew you had enough, how would you actually be living?”

Most people can answer it in theory. Very few let themselves answer it honestly, because an honest answer usually reveals a gap between the life they’re building and the life they’d actually choose. And once you see that gap, you’re on the hook for doing something about it.
