A Different Kind of Finish Line

The Long Haul Journey: This weekend, I made a different choice at the long-haul 100-miler. After completing many of these races, including some 200s and many tough adventures, including some DNFs (did not finish), I went in feeling different, knowing things have changed for me.

I ran strong, felt good, and even set a 50-mile PR of 10:12. I ultimately completed 68 miles in 14:48 and then realized this time, I didn’t need to push through the night and endure the sufferfest. I went in with a good mental attitude—regulated, steady, and present—but I also felt an internal stopping point, and I’m okay with that.

I loved reconnecting with familiar faces, sharing the experience with my best friend, and meeting Sally McRae again, who is a phenomenal role model.

I’m realizing that my evolution isn’t about getting tougher or proving I can endure more. Some of the lessons I’m learning now are less about efforting, pushing, and surviving and more about softening, trusting myself, and letting go.

As I get older, I’m learning that my worth isn’t dependent on my effort or performance. My failures are part of my story, and I’m learning to sit with myself in humility—to recognize I don’t need to prove anything. Old failures and pains still haunt me deeply, but the solution isn’t more effort; it’s release.

I still love my adventures and doing hard things, but I’m seeing that constant full-throttle effort can repel the deeper, more grounded spiritual energy I’m working to cultivate. Learning to balance effort with softness is becoming just as important to me as strength.

Sometimes, letting go is its own finish.

We ate the most delicious cuisine (tacos, Thai, pizza, and poke bowls), sought out the best tres leches cake in all of Tampa (it did not disappoint), and had some killer laughs and forever memories.

Added bonus: I can walk fairly normal, Im not sleep deprived, I wasnt grumpy today for my family, and I can still be fully present and attuned to my clients this week.

Ill spare you the blistered big toenails

Jackson County Ultras 100k. Such a hard race!! So much elevation gain (10k+) and so much trekkin in mud! I was only off of my time last year by 2 mins and running the course backwards proved harder with more elevation gain. Oh and I got first female in my age group of the 40 something ladies. I moved really well through the race. Very consistent. And my headspace was great! After 12 years of doing ultramarathons it’s been the last 3-4ish years where I’ve finally felt really good mentally and emotionally during my races. My life and adventures have been very different the last few years and Jackson 100k was the last race I did in 2024. Always fun to spend quality time with one of my favorite humans @mayjewel77 . @jacksoncountyultras @dinoseries puts on some awesome events. Be sure to check them out. #doindianaoffroad #ultrarunning #lifeisanultra by @maryellenaaa

I woke up today camping out in the backyard next to our lake and the house we built nearly 5 years ago. Wow, what a gift. I watched the stars and camped every night of this long weekend. I tried some night photography, realizing I may not have the best camera or lens’s for it, nonetheless it was beautiful weekend. I need lessons!

I woke up to a text message from my dear friend Kyle, congratulating me on another year sober and realized, wow! It’s been 21 years since my last drink. 21 years since being in the back of a squad car. 21 years since Jail. But for the grace of God, there go I. My life could have take an entirely different trajectory if it wasnt for the pains and failures I had to endure. The support was always there, I just had to turn towards it and trust those that paved the path before me. I try to live my life authentically being me and I know Im on the right path with the right people while also trying to be an example of a sober woman.

Alcohol was just symptom. Braving the sober path opened me up to the gift of feeling and facing all parts of me and connecting with others in sacred space of oneness. by @maryellenaaa

Beauty is all around you. It’s everywhere. To be able to pause and notice beautiful things is how you can be more mindful and connected rather than mindless and disconnected. There is always more than what you see. Be open to possibilities and be open to exploration. Be curious about things. Take moments to just BE. Behold the beauty in others, in the simple things, in the mundane. It’s there. Create the vision and hunt the good stuff. Life happens in moments. What moments are sticking with you today? What moments will you capture? Are you even awake? Let’s see #envision #moments #kodakmoments #beautyiseverywhere #adventuremindset #serenitynow #mindfulness #healthroughnature by @maryellenaaa

Utah's geological wonders are prominently displayed in St. George, a city located at the triple junction of three diverse plateaus and basins. This distinctive geological setup generates remarkable rock formations, notably at “Yant Flats or Candy Cliffs,” which exhibits similarities to “The Wave.” The lines, colors, and textures are magnificent to see in person as they are hidden amongst the mountains and lava fields. I really need to up my photography skills.

During our final day in Utah, Chris and I visited this site, and I enjoyed the experience immensely. Unfortunately, Chris was impressed due to the heat as well as my mistake in making a wrong turn navigating the trail.

A few of the photos are from Moab area and are labeled the rest are Yant Flat.
