Gallery America starts its 9th season by looking into the "cloud house" of Norman's @maryjamesketch!! We find out how her dreamy abstracts and faceless portraits are made, why morning walks with Pop Tart the dog help form her landscapes, and why -- sometimes -- she ends up burning her works. We had a lot of fun on this. Hope you can join us 7pm, Thursday, July 6 on @oetaok!! #oklahomaart #abstractart #normanoklahoma taken in Norman, Oklahoma by @maryjamesketch

Having so much fun with this underpainting technique. Even if half the time I don’t follow it. Oil paint is the best! by @maryjamesketch

Thank you for all the kind words and condolences. I told myself I would give myself a few days to process before I said anything and instead I found myself wandering around like a lost child blurting out “my mother has died.” I suppose no matter your age, when you’ve lost your mother, you’ve lost your mother.

I have many of my mother’s quilts in my house and quilts have shown up in several of my paintings. One day I had the realization that a quilt was a much better metaphor for life than a road. You don’t always get to choose the material you are given, but you can cut away the bad parts, keep the good parts, and arrange them in a pattern that is pleasing to you.

Just as my mother would pinch a piece of mold off a piece of bread and nonchalantly eat the rest, she had a way of focusing on the good in front of her. (Also, she felt our collective health was suffering because we were much too clean).

So, some advice from my mother today: The best revenge is a well-lived life.

I hope you have a great day and don’t forget the joy.

Much love,
Mary by @maryjamesketch

My beloved mother has left this world.

I still do not understand how she managed to work full time and make dinner and sew our clothes. She had a bright, fresh energy - like a cross between a green apple and a water sprite that she managed to keep her entire life (well, until Alzheimer’s).

She loved the sun and being physically active. Her tennis grip remained strong until the end. And my favorite memories of her were when we were dancing together.

She always had her hands on something - sewing, knitting, quilting, counter cross-stitch or puzzles.

She would decimate you at Scrabble while correcting you on your posture and extolling the virtues of spinach.

My peace comes from knowing this long road with Alzheimer’s has ended and that she has joined her beloveds on the other side (that would be her kicking her legs and showing her panties in the last photo).

I love you, Mom. And I’ll see you on the other side. by @maryjamesketch

Have you ever asked a tree or flower for advice? What did it say? If you haven’t tried it, I recommend writing it out while you ask. by @maryjamesketch
