So I was in the southern part of Slovenia, Suha Krajina (Dolenjska), of mum's birthplace - a land of contrasts. Dry rock meets green fields, and curious sunken crater-like holes cradle vegetable gardens, often fed by underground streams.

Villages nestle close together by paths of memory and daily life. Homes are the traditional and new, barns and kozolec, some restored with oak in a dance of tradition and innovation.

Houses are neat, streets clean. Everywhere the careful arrangement of woodstacks speaks of both order and tradition.

On every hillside, zidance - charming vineyard cottages 🍇 mark the land in family history. I stayed in my cousin's zidanca for four days. Views of the mountains faraway. A peaceful retreat. I walked - through villages, to family homes, to the cemetery where ancestors rest.

I followed forest paths, 🐌🌲🍃 the silence broken only by birdsong and the crunch of leaves 🍁- all the while keeping a watchful eye for bears. 🐻

Long walks, alone. Just thoughts. The presence of what came before. 🍂

Slovenia's countryside is a breath of fresh air! 🇸🇮 Travelling through has been a journey of the heart.
The landscape is alive:forests brimming with biodiversity, surround the hills, forming a green tapestry. Neatly planted rows of corn + wheat stretch across the fields, while wild flowers bloom freely. Every step reconnects me with my roots.

No colorbond fences, just living hedges, fruit trees, vegetable and flower gardens. Century-old houses, churches + castles dot the landscape. The sound of church bells echo through the valley.

Days pass in long walks, bike rides + warm conversations, faces familiar + new.

Village folk tend their vegetable plots (njive) out in the fields. It's a comforting rhythm - with connection to the earth.

This land speaks to something deep in me. I'm soaking in every moment.
