For Emmy.

“I have her hands, crooked fingers and all.
I have her skin.

I, for better or for worse, have her ‘what-you-see-is-what-you-get,’ and, ‘I-can-do-it-myself’-ness.

I have her love of cooking, and her complete inability to do it without making a mess.

I share her love of art, and books, and nature.

I’d like to think that I have her wit, and her innate openness and lack of prejudice.

I like to think that I, too, am the type of person who never misses an opportunity to be generous; who is very likely to take the bracelet you just complimented off my wrist, hand it to you, and say ‘it’s yours.’

She has given me more good things than I could ever count. I am her only granddaughter— she is all mine. I am spoiled. I am cherished.

I am the luckiest girl in the world.”

I wrote these words almost exactly 2 years ago. Driving home from work one afternoon, I looked down at my right hand. It was gripping the steering wheel precisely where the sliver of rush-hour sunlight peeked through the trees and into my window. I don’t know what it was— maybe it was my shiny, olive skin, my bumpy knuckles, my protruding veins, or the angle of the sun on that curve of 285, but in that moment, as strange as it sounds, I would’ve believed you if you’d told me that was my grandmother’s hand. It looked JUST like hers, in every unexplainable way. I began to think about just how many parts of me, visible and invisible, look just like her, as well as the possibility that she willed me to be that way haha. She always told my girly-girl mom that she was going to end up with a little girl who “liked to play ball, climb trees, and get dirty,” like she did…

Emmy went to be with Jesus last week and we’ll miss her every day until we see her again. She was truly the greatest & I love to talk about her, so don’t be afraid to ask. There’s so much to say.

On a random Thursday in June, without much thought (other than maybe that I’d had ENOUGH with the way life was going at that point), I re-downloaded @strava, signed up for @everywomansmarathon, and to my astonishment, never looked back. Running was not a 2024 resolution for me (much less knocking out a marathon). I arrived in 2024 in a spiral of utter devastation. From January 10th: “It’s like I’m ALMOST enough, but at the end of the day, for one reason or another, I’m just not... like I could disappear & everyone would just keep moving…” Yeah. A real upper, huh! So ya girl was NOT making any resolutions at this point last year, BUT I still ended up doing the most impossible thing I could think of this year! And loving it! And became such a better version of myself by doing it! I ran almost 500 miles in 2024, and between 4 races, I plan to run 1,000 miles in 2025. All that to say:

It’s always darkest before the dawn. Screw the calendar. Find a sunrise. Let it take you by surprise. Chase the light. It doesn’t matter if it’s January 1st or June 6th. Be where you are today. It all belongs. by @marymichaelbrenner

A marathon!! I don’t even know where to start! I’ve never experienced something that felt SO bad & SO good all at once haha. Overcame a lot these last few months just to get here today, and today held an unexpected overcoming all its own. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned through all of this (and there’s a lot more than one), it’s that I don’t have to fear discomfort. I am strong enough to face it, to rebel against it, and to accomplish my goals in spite of it. And I really, really needed to know that 🤍 Just grateful… for my body & mind, for @mustardseedchiro keeping me moving through the physical battles these last few months & my community who carried me through the mental ones. Also fr have to thank @yellowrunner for unknowingly being my para-social coach & mentor. You’ve made running—and life—make sense in ways I didn’t know I needed, and I will never be the same. Finally, to my biggest cheerleader, thank you @jordankbrenner for encouraging me to bet on myself. Even when it felt like the odds weren’t in my favor, you never doubted. What an AMAZING experience!!!! And also maybe the most insane version of “when the group chat comes to life.” I take full responsibility, but I don’t regret it. As you can see in the photos I’ve taken there over the last 10 years, Western North Carolina— especially its trails & camping towns— holds a special place in my heart. After seeing the horrific impact of Hurricane Helene, I’ve been searching for a meaningful way to help. I’m excited to be joining a collective effort to raise $2 million at the Old Fort Strong Endurance Festival. I’ll be running a 6-hour overnight trail run this December to raise funds for WNC. My personal goal is to raise $1,500. If you feel moved to support this cause, your contribution can make a real difference as it will go directly back into the hands of the families & businesses of Old Fort. The link to give is in my bio. Thanks for your support 🏃🏻‍♀️ taken in Western North Carolina by @marymichaelbrenner

Distinguished Graduate & Squadron Commander 2nd Lieutenant Jordan Brenner, United States Air Force 🎖️
Still trying to find the words for how proud I am of you. Proud to stand beside you and for our family to serve our country in this way. Impressive isn’t a big enough word… the only way to say it is that you’re clearly set apart, and nobody is more aware or humble about that than you. Favor. Fortitude. Faithfulness. Man oh man, I am honored to be your wife. And I am SO glad you’re home.
Also so special to have @tiffanyeaster17 give Jordan his oath & @ericbrennerofficial give him his first salute. Thankful for everyone who has walked us through this season, we really, really couldn’t have done this without you 🤟🏼 taken in Maxwell Air Force Base by @marymichaelbrenner
