My favorite part of the process is what I call “light foraging.” After lots of trial and error of trying to figure out how to capture the shape of light (cyanotypes that were too blurry, photos that were Bland) I went back to basics- I could paint the light with a fast-dry, diluted ink. What emerged was something I didn’t expect- the hand of the artist. When I layer oils on top of the quick imprint of light, the sloppy brush stokes bleed through. It’s a snapshot of a moment in time. I saw this light when after I installed my largest piece- a 60x90 inch beauty in the Hamptons. I took myself out to get ice cream after (ya girl loves a sweet treat) and this light stopped me in my tracks. I painted the light right when I got back to the studio and now this painting lives at @amelieduchalard “Pantigo road, 3:14 pm” 36x48 inches. Mary Royall Wilgis: The "day" in our Hamptons Fine Art Fair presentation, "Day and Night"⁠⁠Mary Royall Wilgis (b. 1997, Baltimore, MD) is a light painter based in Brooklyn. Her work is a meditation on the texture of time and the thing-ness of light. To honor the moment in time of creation, she titles her paintings with the time or location where the light was “foraged.” Wilgis explores the personality of the light through thin layers of oil paint and hand-cut translucent mesh. The overlaid layers of fabric give it a distinct sculptural quality that makes the work respond to its environment by interacting with the present light sources, creating light and shadow within the world of the painting itself, exploring how light can shape space, measure time, and define color.⁠⁠See "Day and Night" at the fair in booth 141 from July 9th to 12th. Each one of these pieces holds a story of light: the light on my commute to the studio when I’m running late but stop anyway, the light from a street lamp on a late walk home to Hancock street, the light outside my friends stoop where we sit and talk about life. Each one is a choice to stop for the light instead of simply rushing by.
